BGSU Set For Three-Game Series Against Virginia Tech In Program's First Trip To Blacksburg

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team will continue their non-conference stretch this weekend with a three-game series against Virginia Tech. The Hokies will be the second ACC team the Falcons have faced this season, previously taking on Louisville. BGSU and Virginia Tech are scheduled for a doubleheader on Saturday (May 6) beginning at 3 p.m. The series will conclude on Sunday (May 7) with a 1 p.m. first pitch. All games in the series will be available to stream on ACCNX.

Scouting Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech enters the weekend coming off a 5-3 midweek win over Marshall. The win moved the Hokies to a 26-16 record on the season while they carry an 11-12 record within the ACC and are 19-7 when playing at home. Virginia Tech has been without their top hitter for the last six games, Jack Hurley who leads the team in doubles, home runs, batting average and slugging percentage.
Against The Hokies All Time
Bowling Green and Virginia Tech have met just one time previously in program history, coming during the 1998 season. The Hokies took a 13-9 win in a seven-inning game on March 11, 1998. The game was part of the Pepsi/Johnny Quick Classic in California. This weekend's series will mark the first trip to Blacksburg for the Falcons all-time.

Last Time Out
After a few weather-related schedule changes, the Falcons took on the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Wednesday (May 3) in Rochester, Mich. Entering the sixth inning BGSU and Oakland were knotted up at 1-1, but the Bowling Green offense erupted over the final four innings, scoring 11 runs. The Orange and Brown tallied two in the sixth before putting up three in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to capture the 12-2 victory.

- The last time Bowling Green tallied two Power 5 wins on the road in the same season was in 2006, beating Penn State, 5-4, and Notre Dame, 11-8.
- The series will mark BGSU's first trip to Blacksburg in program history with the lone game in the all-time series being played at a neutral site in 1998.

- Gage Schenk enters the weekend tied with Burke Badenhop for 10th all-time in program history for career strikeouts with 177. Schenk needs 179 to tie Kyle Knoblauch for ninth, 183 to tie Jason Tippie for eighth, 184 for seventh with Keith Laughlin, 185 for sixth with Jason Kelley and 186 to match Andrew Abrahamowicz for fifth.
- Over the course of the season, the Falcons have logged 26 sacrifice bunts which is tied for 42nd in the nation and second in the Mid-American Conference.
- Similarly, the Orange and Brown are 44th in the country for stolen bases per game with an average of 1.71.
- Nathan Rose has 15 doubles on the season, a new career-high for his time as a Falcon and sixth in the MAC. Rose needs one more double to enter the top 10 all-time in the record book for doubles in a season. Rose also has a seven-game on-base streak.
- Nathan Archer heads into the week tied for fifth in the nation in sacrifice flies with seven. Archer is also in the midst of a 14-game on-base streak, including a five-game hitting streak. Over the 14-game span, he is batting .321 (17-for-53) with 16 RBI, 13 runs scored, eight walks drawn, seven home runs and four doubles.
- Sam Seidel has tallied six sacrifice bunts for BGSU this season, leading the team and tied for first in the conference. Seidel also has three home runs in the last four games with his last three hits going out of the park.
- Kyle Gurney has a five-game hitting streak entering the weekend and has reached base in 25 of the last 26 games. Gurney is also four doubles away from entering the record book, needing 41 to tie Lee Morrison for 10th all-time in career doubles. On the defensive side, Gurney has 736 career putouts and needs 750 to enter the top 10 in the record book.
- Ryan Johnston has put together a five-game hitting streak for the Falcons, tallying eight RBI over the five-game stretch.
- Leighton Banjoff enters the weekend with a seven-game on-base streak, drawing nine walks over the span.
- Against Oakland, Logan Bell made his fifth appearance of the season, tossing another scoreless frame. On the year, Bell has pitched 3.2 scoreless innings across his five outings and has not allowed a run.
