Falcons Turn Focus To RedHawks With First MAC Series Of 2024

BGSU, Miami (OH) Scheduled For Three-Game Weekend Series
OXFORD, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team will begin competition within the Mid-American Conference this weekend, heading south to Oxford, Ohio to take on the Miami (OH) RedHawks. The Falcons and RedHawks are set for a three-game series, marking the first series in the state of Ohio this season for BGSU after beginning the season with three series in Tennessee. This is the second time in the last three years that BGSU will open MAC play in Oxford, doing so to start the 2022 conference schedule.

Scouting Miami (OH)
The RedHawks are currently 5-5 with a midweek game set for Wednesday night (March 6) against Wright State on the road before hosting the Falcons. Miami has won four straight, including a sweep over Oakland at home last weekend, outscoring the Golden Grizzlies 46-22 over three games. BGSU and Miami had a common non-conference opponent in Middle Tennessee State. The RedHawks took two of three from the Blue Raiders, including a 10-inning win to begin the series.

BGSU Bats Heat Up In Tennessee
Playing their first nine games of the season in the state of Tennessee, the Falcons showed life at the plate. As a team, Bowling Green has belted a MAC-leading 13 home runs through nine games. So far this season, eight different Falcons have logged a home run. DJ Newman leads the team with three followed by Nathan Archer, Leighton Banjoff and Tyler Ross all with two. The list rounds out with one from Brady Birchmeier, Gavin Ganun, Jack Krause and Sam Seidel.
Seidel On The Bases
Sam Seidel is the only Falcon this season to reach base at least once in each of BGSU's nine games. Through nine games, Seidel has logged nine hits for the Orange and Brown as well as eight walks and one hit by pitch. He's made the trips count as well, scoring six times for BGSU and stealing three bases, including a stolen base in each of the last two Bowling Green games. Seidel has filled out his stat line with six RBI, a double, a triple and a home run this year. Seidel is also one of just 18 players in the MAC with a triple this year.
DJ Doing It All
DJ Newman has been a force for the Falcons in both facets of the game. Serving as the Friday starter on the mound the first three weekends, Newman currently leads BGSU in innings pitched (14.0) and strikeouts (21). As for at the plate, Newman is leading just as well. He currently tops the stat sheet for BGSU in hits (13), runs scored (11), total bases (23), stolen bases (4), batting average (.371) and home runs (3). Additionally, his eight RBI are second on the team.
