Falcons Complete Sweep of Rockets in Battle of I-75 With 3-2 Win
May 18, 2024 | Baseball
Base-running blunder by the Rockets takes tying run off the board in the eighth inning
Toledo almost tied the game 3-3 in the eighth inning, but a base-running blunder by Caden Konczak at second base ended the inning and the threat by the Rockets. With runners on first and second and two outs, Toledo's Scott Mackiewicz hit a soft liner into shallow center field. By the time the Falcons grabbed the ball, JP Wagner had scored and Konczak was on third base. However, Konczak never touched second base on his way from first base. On the appeal, he was called out when Sam Seidel stepped on second base. Since the force was in play at second, Konczak was called out and the run was taken off the board, which proved to be the difference in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BGSU scored first when Sam Seidel put a ball in play that scored David Silva to make it 1-0 in the second inning. Seidel reached on a throwing error by the second baseman.
- Toledo tied the game in the top of the fourth, 1-1, as a hit and run by the Rockets scored a run as the double play option was taken off the table.
- A Landon Roque two-run single in the bottom of the fourth gave BGSU the lead back. He drove in Leighton Banjoff, who led off the inning with a single, and Jack Krause, who was hit by a pitch. Both advanced into scoring position on a Seidel fielder's choice.
- Toledo plated its second run in the sixth inning after a leadoff walk advanced to second on a wild pitch, followed by an RBI single by UT's Brayden White.
