Lake Superior State Scores Early and Holds on to Beat Bowling Green, 1-0
January 17, 2026 | Ice Hockey
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Lake Superior State (9-14-1, 6-10 CCHA) scored three minutes into the game, and goalie Rorke Applebee made 35 saves as the Lakers defeated the Bowling Green Falcons (12-6-4, 9-4-2 CCHA), 1-0, on Saturday night inside Slater Family Ice Arena. The win prevented a potential season sweep by BGSU.
The Falcons fired 70 shots toward goal, 35 of which were on net, but Applebee stood tall throughout. LSSU's lone goal came on a well-executed play when Tyson Galloway wrapped the puck around the net to Wilson Dahlheimer for the game-winner.
BGSU earned three points on the weekend and remains in fourth place in the CCHA standings with 30 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• LSSU started the scoring 3:00 minutes into the game when Tyson Galloway whipped the puck around the net to Wilson Dahlheimer for the quick score. Johnny Druskinis was credited with the second assist.
• Jaden Grant appeared to tie the game for BGSU, but the rebound was swept away by Applebee before it crossed the goal line.
• The Lakers blocked 19 of BGSU's shots, as the Falcons spent much of the night in the offensive zone.
FALCON NOTES
• BGSU outscored LSSU on the weekend, 3-2.
• BGSU finished the season series 3-1 against LSSU.
• The Falcons were shut out for just the second time this season and the first since the season opener at Niagara.
• Ty Higgins made a spectacular one-handed, diving stick save late in the third period while LSSU was shooting at an empty net.
FROM THE LOCKER ROOM
"Credit to Lake Superior State. They played to their identity and did exactly what we saw on film coming into tonight. They clogged the middle of the ice, were big and strong in their zone, and flipped pucks out as we anticipated. They caught a bit of a break on their goal, which was somewhat fluky—much like our second goal last night. At the end of the day, we have to find different ways to manufacture offense. This wasn't for lack of effort. We spent a lot of time in their zone, but they blocked shots, made saves, and we missed the net too often. They scored, and that was the difference." — Dennis Williams, BGSU Head Coach
