Falcons, Fighting Irish Skate To Scintillating Stalemate; Morneau, Moore Lead Way In Shootout

Emerson Has Hand In All Three BGSU Goals For Three-Point Night
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University hockey team took on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Friday night (Jan. 30) on the road to begin the home-and-home weekend series. The Falcons and Fighting Irish worked through 60 minutes of tied hockey and the five-minute overtime didn't settle the score, sending the night to a shootout after the tie. Noah Morneau began the shootout with a goal, becoming the only score of the six tries between the two teams with Cole Moore securing three saves to give BGSU the shootout. As for the regulation action, Quinn Emerson led the Falcons with a goal and two assists, having a hand in all three BGSU goals. He was joined in the scoring by Morneau and Ty Higgins as the Falcon goal scorers for the night. The tie moves BGSU to 14-6-5 on the season.

"I don't think at the end of the day we played a great game. We always talk about playing to a standard and for me it was all about we didn't get a lot of zone time I don't think. They are a big, heavy team. We need to get pucks off the wall quicker, so we're going to make a few adjustments tomorrow. We have to be a lot more physical... But we found a way. We battled, we competed... Cole Moore was great in the net, played really well for us. You look at that overtime, I don't know if we touched the puck too much in the three-on-three. HOW IT HAPPENED
- Notre Dame took the early lead 4:32 into the game, as Henry Nelson snuck a long shot through traffic past Cole Moore, slipping just inside the right pipe.
- BGSU dominated offensive possession for most of the first period after the early Notre Dame goal. BGSU had 10 shots on goal, but the Irish won 11-of-15 faceoffs to keep the Falcons at bay in the first frame.
- Towards the end of the first period Gustav Stjernberg was tagged for a five-minute hitting from behind penalty that carried over to the second period. BGSU withstood the onslaught from the Irish and killed the penalty.
- Quinn Emerson tied the game, 1-1, at 8:26 in the second period on a breakaway. Brett Pfoh had possession most of the transition and dumped to Emerson at the doorstep. Ivan Korodiuk picked up the second assist.
- Jackson Niedermayer got penalized for hooking, which led to a Cole Knuble power play goal nearly three minutes later, pushing the Fighting Irish back up by one goal, 2-1.
- Ty Higgins tied the game with his first collegiate goal 1:06 into the final period. The power play goal was assisted by Brayden Crampton and Emerson.
- Notre Dame scored 48 seconds later in transition to take the 3-2 lead on a Sutter Muzzatti goal.
- Noah Morneau tied the game four minutes later after Emerson found him on the doorstep. Crampton picked up the second assist.
- With the tie holding through overtime, the game went down as a tie with a shootout result. Morneau began the shootout with a goal for the Falcons, the only goal of the shootout with Cole Moore logging three saves for the Falcons.
FALCON NOTES
- F Quinn Emerson finished with three points (1-2-3). It was his team-leading seventh game with at least two points.
- D Ty Higgins scored his first collegiate goal to start the third period.
- D Brayden Crampton tied his career high with two assists.
- F Noah Morneau returned to the lineup for the first time since Jan. 9 at Ferris State. He missed the last five games with an injury. He finished with the game-tying goal in regulation before notching the lone shootout goal of the night.
