BOWLING GREEN, Ohio --The Bowling Green Falcon hockey team brought their game back to the BGSU Ice Arena for their first game since Nov. 14 with the start of a two-game series with the Lake Superior State University Lakers on Friday night. The Falcons battled back from a 2-0 first period deficit, but could not recover, losing 2-1 to the Lakers.
Lake Superior's Matt Cowie (Jr., D) scored the first goal of the game at 4:03 in the first period. Following a Bowling Green turnover in the neutral zone, the LSSU front line charged up the ice to take advantage of the possession change. With traffic building in front of BG goaltender Nick Eno, Cowie took a slap shot from outside of the far-side circle that bounced off a body in front of the net. The deflected puck change directions and found the back of the cage before an attempt at a stop could be made. Ben Power and Rick Schofield were credited with assists for LSSU and the Lakers took a 1-0 lead over the Falcons with 15:57 remaining in the first period.
The Falcon penalty kill was tested for the first and only time in the opening period after freshman defenseman Ian Ruel was whistled for an interference call, putting him in the penalty box and giving LSSU a one man advantage. With less than two minutes remaining, the Laker power play unit scored the second Laker goal from a shot by Simon Gysbers. Gysbers received the puck at the far circle and put a hard one-timer towards Eno. Despite getting a piece of the puck, it slid under the junior goalie and over the red line for the second score of the period. Lake Superior took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Both teams came out surging in the second period with play on the ice getting chippy between the two CCHA teams. The second period featured seven penalties and produced three power play chances for each team. The only team to capitalize on their opportunity with an extra man was Bowling Green when they halved the Laker lead on a Tomas Petruska power-play goal. Petruska scored his third goal of the season and put Bowling Green on the board when he put a hard shot past LSSU goaltender Brian Wilson-Mahoney from out in front of the net. On the all-senior power-play goal, David Solway and Kyle Page received credit for the assists. That power-play score was Bowling Green's first power play goal in their last 18 chances and broke a three-game streak without a power-play goal.
The third period was a pure defensive struggle between the Lakers and the Falcons, but was played cleanly with only penalty been called during the whole third period. Bowling Green would get the lone power play opportunity in the third frame, but could not capitalize on it despite putting two shots on goal in the two minute one-man advantage.
Bowling Green pulled Nick Eno to create another man advantage with 00:56 remaining on the clock, however did not score ending the game with a final score of 2-1 in favor of Lake Superior.
The Falcons put 21 shots on goal against Brian Mahoney-Wilson, saving 20 on the evening. Eno faced 27 Laker shots, saving 25. Bowling Green went shot-for-shot with the Lakers in the second and third periods when both teams put nine and seven shots on goal, respectively.
With his third goal of the season, Petruska begins his second point scoring streak after having a five-game scoring streak snapped on Nov. 28 at No. 14/15 Notre Dame. He now has points (1-1--2) in two consecutive games. Solway, with his helper on the Petruska goal, now has assists in back-to-back games.
Two of the three goals in Friday night's game were scored in the last two minutes of a period, one by both teams. Bowling Green has now scored nine times this season in the last two minutes of a period. With the late first period LSSU goal, Conversely, Bowling Green has now given up 13 goals in that time interval.
With the loss, the Falcons drop to 2-11-2 overall and possess a 2-6-2-2 conference mark. The Lake Superior win improves LSSU's record to 7-7-3 overall and 4-6-1-1 in CCHA play.
The Falcons will look for the weekend split when they regroup for a slightly earlier start time Saturday, Dec. 5, for the weekend finale with the Lakers. The puck will drop at 5:05 p.m. EST.
