THIS WEEK IN FALCON HOCKEY ...
... old and new Falcons face off when the No. 6/6 Miami RedHawks come to the BGSU Ice Arena on Nov. 19-20. First-year Falcon head coach Chris Bergeron takes the other side of the bench against his alma mater and former employer for the first time. Former Falcon Patrick Tiesling returns to the arena which he originally called home before moving on to Oxford, Ohio. After BGSU nearly knocking off the former No. 1/1 RedHawks last season in the opener and the physical matchup that ensued in game two, this weekend may provide a serious chance at redemption for those on either side of the ice.

LAST TIME OUT ...
... the Falcons experienced another weekend of ups and downs and again performing better on Friday night than on Saturday night. Bowling Green did get the power play unit going having scored a PPG on each night, courtesy of Brett Mohler (Fr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) and until a five-minute major penalty to end Saturday's game the Falcons were 12-for-13 on the penalty kill. Falcon youth dominated the scoring in each contest with the freshman and sophomore classes registering all nine points acquired last weekend. Nick Eno (Sr., Howell, Mich.) had s econd straight strong start garnering a “W”, making 26-of-27 saves in Friday night's 2-1 victory over Northern Michigan.
GOING FOR 800!
The Bowling Green Falcon hockey program is one with a storied history and over its 40+ year existance the program has racked up 798 wins (just short of an average of 20 wins per season). The Falcons have a chance to get that 800th win while in Marquette, Mich. against Northern Michigan University this weekend with a sweep of the Wildcats. Here are a list of what coach brought home milestone wins for the Falcon program:
Win #100 - Ron Mason
Win #200 - Ron Mason
Win #300 - Jerry York
Win #400 - Jerry York
Win #500 - Jerry York
Win #600 - Buddy Powers
Win #700 - Buddy Powers
Win #800 - ??
HOW MANY GAMES HAVE YOU PLAYED?!
After the weekend set with Northern Michigan University Nov. 12-13, Bowling Green has now played in 1,600 games on the dot in the program's history. Number-1,600 was played on Saturday night in a 5-1 loss to the Wildcats. Bowling Green now shoots for program win #800 on game #1,601 against Miami this weekend.
BIG 'FAMILY' REUNION
Bowling Green head coach Chris Bergeron is reuniting with his alma mater and former employer for the first time since leaving Oxford in April 2010. Bergeron was an assistant coach for the RedHawks from 2001-2010. While an assistant under Miami head coach and former teammate Enrico Blasi, Bergeron and the RedHawks amassed a 18-5-1 against BGSU but now the tables are turned. Bergeron also played alongside of current BGSU assistant coach Ty Eigner's brother, Trent, as they served as co-captains together at Miami in the 1991-92 season. Also making a return to Falcon Country for the first time in two years is former Falcon Patrick Tiesling. Tieling played for BGSU from 2007-09. In 64 games as a Falcon, he tallied nine assists. He now wears Red and White after transfering to Miami and sitting out the mandatory year per NCAA transfer rules.
THE KEY IS IN “THE Q”
During the 2008-09 Stanley Cup Championship run of the Pittsburgh Penguins, head coach and BGSU alum Dan Bylsma ate a Chicken Ancho Chile BBQ Burrito from Qdoba Mexican Grille before every championship game and won the cup that year. BGSU SID Ryan Gasser does before every Friday home game and in chances (since he did not eat Qdoba on the season opener vs. Michigan), BGSU is 2-0-0 when he eats the same menu item. He also had the same burrito on Wednesday prior to leaving for the NMU series, in which the Falcons won game one. To help foster this winning streak going into the Miami series, Gasser and “the voice” of Falcon hockey Everett Fitzhugh will be dining at Qdoba at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon for all to join in some delicious food and Falcon hockey talk.
THE “WOJ”, “SLO”, “MOH” LINE
Over the weekend the line of Cam Wojtala (Fr., Trenton, Mich.), Jake Sloat (Fr., Louisville, Colo.) and Brett Mohler (Fr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) twice lit the lamp together teaming up for a goal in each game of the Northern Michigan series (Nov. 12-13). Mohler served as the goal scorer in each instance with Sloat and Wojtala serving up assists.
ENO STRINGS STRONG STARTS TOGETHER
After three consecutive starts where Nick Eno (Sr., Howell, Mich.) allowed four goals to the competition, he has created a newfound a hot streak over the last two games he has played in. As the “Friday Starter” for the Falcons, he has pulled in wins in each of this last two games. In that time he has allowed only three goals (1 PPG) and made 56 saves. In his previous three games against Alaska, Clarkson and Alabama-Huntsville he allowed six power-play goals and made 69 combined saves in 81 chances.
FRIDAY NIGHT HIGHLIGHTS
The 2010-11 season has regularly seen more success on Friday night games than Saturday night games. On Fridays, BGSU is 3-3-0 as opposed to Saturday when the team is 2-4-0 and have dropped their last three weekend finales. In every Friday night game after the Michigan series (5 games), the Falcons have put more shots on net (25.2) than on their Saturday showing (18.0). The Falcons have also allowed more shots against on Saturday (33.3) than on Friday (28.8).
RECENT FALCON RALLIES
A few of the Falcons have had some pretty good numbers over the last five games, including Marc Rodriguez (So., Aurora, Ill.), Jordan Samuels-Thomas (So., South Windsor, Conn.) and Brett Mohler. Rodriguez is in the middle of his second point splurge of the season. After posting two goals and three points over four non-conference games earlier this season, he now has five points over the last four games including two goals scored. Samuels-Thomas had a four-game point streak snapped in the NMU finale (Nov. 13). In those four games he scored points in he had five points, four by assist. Lastly, Mohler made a name in the power play scoring column having a PPG in each of his last two games and a point in each of his last three games.
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION AT BGSU
On November 10, Bowling Green State University celebrated its centennial as a part of a full year long anniversary recognition. On that Wednesday, a full day of celebration was capped off with the Falcon football team hosting the Miami RedHawks at Doyt L. Perry Stadium. Unfortunately, the Falcons lost on a fog-overridden field, 24-21.
POWER (PLAY) SURGE?
At one point this season, the Falcons were held without a power-play goal through 38 chances with a man advantage. Recently, this streak has been forgotten since the Falcons have scored two power-play tallies in their last 11 chances over the last two games.
ONE-GOAL GAME TURNAROUND
As stated on page six of the notes under “Oh so close in 2009-10”, the Falcons were on the wrong end of the stick in many of their one-goal games last season. In 11 games, they won only three games decided by one score. This season, BGSU is 3-0-0 in games decided by one goal or less. Granted, in two of those games the Falcons took a two-goal lead into the third period and ended up winning by that single tally.
M-ROD CONTINUES HOT STREAK
Sophomore forward Marc Rodriguez (Aurora, Ill.) had the best weekend (statistically) against Notre Dame on Nov. 5-6. Rodriguez had not had a multiple point night in his career but had TWO against the Irish over the weekend with a 1-3-4 line over the two-game span.He scored BGSU's first goal in Friday night's 3-2 win then assisted on the second Falcon goal. Ironically enough, he also contributed on the first two Falcon goals of Saturday night's game as well, this time assisting on each. Rodriguez is already having a career year with a 4-4-8 line this season after a 3-2-5 line in 2009-10.
GROVER POSTING HOCKEY OR VOLLEYBALL STATS?
Though defense is an area where Bowling Green looks to improve upon this weekend, sophomore defenseman Max Grover (Kentwood, Mich.) leads the Falcons in blocked shots with 18 on the season. Three times Grover has registered four blocks, twice against Alaska and then again on Saturday (Nov. 6) against Notre Dame. Bobby Shea (Harrison Township, Mich.) is next on the team with 12 blocks on the season. David Solway leads all forwards with ten blocks on the season.
