Bowling Green allowed two power-play goals to Miami, each at the 12-minute mark of the second and third periods. Pat Cannone and Carter Camper were the goal scorers, respectively.
All three RedHawk scores were done while having an extra skater on the ice. Miami scored the first goal of the game at 10:44 of the second period when a penalty against Bowling Green allowed the RedHawks to pull Connor Knapp out of the net and give them a sixth man on the sheet. Defenseman Chris Wideman put a shot on goal that was deflected out for Reilly Smith to capture and found the back of the net.
Adding to the damage, the penalty that caused the first goal led to the second goal being scored as well. While serving the power play that was implemented following Miami's first goal, Smith added to his scoring column by capitalizing on a nice setup from Camper and wristed home his second goal to put Miami up, 2-0.
Camper added his own score with 7:15 remaining in the game, again on a power play chance. Receiving a pass through the slot, Camper went top-shelf on Hammond to give the 'Hawks a 3-0 lead.
Bowling Green's offense struggled, compiling only nine shots on goal for the game while Miami put 38 pucks on net for sophomore goaltender Andrew Hammond (Surrey, British Columbia) to knock away. Hammond ended the night with 35 saves, twice stopping 12 shots in a period.
Despite the lack of offense on paper, the Falcons did have a number of sporadic scoring chances throughout the game. Brett Mohler (Fr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) had two breakaway opportunities in the game, both of which thwarted despite turning a turnover into a near goal for BGSU. Chad Sumsion (Fr., Woodstock, Ontario), Wade Finegan (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) and Nathan Pageau (Fr., Stoney Brook, Quebec) also had breakaway opportunities that were put to rest by Knapp and the rest of the Miami defense.
The Falcons (5-9-0, 2-8-0)have now lost three straight games and prepare to hit the road for Troy, New York for the RPI Tournament held over Thanksgiving break. The tournament will include the Falcons, Alabama-Huntsville, Connecticut and the host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the first of two holiday tournaments that Bowling Green will participate in. Bowling Green will play in a rematch with the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers on Friday, Oct. 26 in game one of the tournament at 4:00 p.m. EST and follow playing the winner of Friday night's game between RPI and UConn.
