BOXSCORE
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost 3-0 to Alaska-Fairbanks Friday night, marking the third time this season the Falcons have been held scoreless. Three different players lit the lamp for Alaska, including two Nanook tallies on the power play.
Alaska-Fairbanks came out flying in the first period, outshooting the Falcons 21-5 in the frame. Junior goaltender Andrew Hammond made some key saves for Bowling Green, holding the Nanooks scoreless in the first half of the period. Alaska-Fairbanks finally broke through Hammond at the 12:30 mark, on a rebound goal from Nanook sophomore Colton Beck in front. Beck's sixth goal of the season gave Alaska-Fairbanks the 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Falcons looked much better in the second stanza, doubling the Nanooks 14-7 in shots. Despite the Bowling Green shot advantage, Alaska-Fairbanks scored again in the closing minute of the period. Junior Nik Yaremchak tipped home a shot from the point on the power play, giving the Alberta native his team-leading seventh goal of the season. The goal also gave the Nanooks the 2-0 lead heading into the final period.
The third period was dominated by defense, as both teams could only muster nine shots (5-4 in favor of BG) total in the frame. The Nanooks would strike again however, scoring an empty-net power-play goal in the closing minute of the game. The Alaska-Fairbanks' tally would put the final score at 3-0, and give the Nanooks the shutout victory.
The win marked Nanook senior goaltender Scott Greenham's second shutout of the season, and tenth of his career.
Alaska-Fairbank's 21 shots allowed were the most given up by Bowling Green in a period since the Falcon's opening playoff game against Northern Michigan (3/4/11) last season. The Falcons gave up 21 shots in the opening frame of that game as well, which eventually turned into a 6-3 Bowling Green loss.
The loss drops Bowling Green's record to 6-7-2 overall, and 1-7-1-1 in conference play. The win puts Alaska-Fairbanks' record at 5-8-2 overall, with a record of 2-7-2-0 in CCHA action.
The Falcons are back in action tomorrow night in an encore game against Alaska-Fairbanks. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
