Falcons over the Weekend
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost to the Miami RedHawks 4-0 Friday night, thanks to four even-strength goals and a 23-save performance from Miami senior goaltender Cody Reichard. The loss increased Bowling Green's CCHA losing streak to six games. Reichard's shutout was his first of the season, and marked only the second time this year Bowling Green has been held off of the score sheet. The first Bowling Green shutout was a 4-0 loss to Ferris State at home on Nov. 4. The last time Bowling Green was held scoreless on the road to a CCHA opponent was against Michigan State last March, when the Falcons fell 2-0 thanks to 17 saves from Drew Palmisano.
The Falcons defeated Miami University in a CCHA shootout Saturday night, breaking the Falcons 12-game losing streak to the RedHawks. Freshman Ryan Carpenter scored with just over a minute remaining in regulation to tie the game, allowing Sophomore Bryce Williamson to score the game winner in the shootout. Carpenter's three-point night (1 goal, 2 assists) gives him the team lead in points for the year (14), passing sophomore Camden Wojtala (13). Carpenter is also tied with Williamson for the team lead in goals (6).
The Last Time
Bowling Green dropped both games to Alaska last season, with the Falcons being outscored 8-2 in the series. Former captain David Solway recorded the lone Falcon goal in the first game of the series, with Nick Eno stopping 23 of 27 shots in the loss. Camden Wojtala managed the only score for the Falcons in the second game of the series, with Andrew Hammond stopping 44 of 48 shots in the loss.
With both games being at Alaska last year, this weekend marks the Nanooks' first return to Bowling Green since the 2009-10 season. The Falcons split that series, winning the first contest 3-1, and dropping the second game 5-3.
Snapping Streaks
The regulation tie in Miami which led to the eventual shootout win snaps several streaks for the Falcons. The most recent is a six-game losing streak to CCHA opponents. The second streak snapped was a 12-game losing streak to Miami, which stretched all the way back to the 2007-08 season.
Four Goal Wall
The Falcons mustered four goals on Saturday night against Miami, which ties their season high. The Falcons have hit that total three times this season, all of which have resulted in a tie or win. The Falcons scored five goals in two games last season, both against Alabama-Huntsville.
Many Heroes
The Falcons continue to spread the wealth this season when it comes to game-winning goals. The Falcons win total sits at six games heading into the weekend series against Alaska-Fairbanks. All of the Falcons wins have come from game-winning goals scored by six different players.
- Bryce Williamson: 10/7/11 against UConn
- Dan DeSalvo: 10/14/11 against UAH
- Ryan Carpenter: 10/15/11 against UAH
- Adam Berkle: 10/21/11 against LSSU
- Cameron Sinclair: 11/11/11 against Canisius
- Ryan Viselli: 11/12/11 against Canisius
Limited Work….Big Results
Senior Cameron Sinclair has made the most of his limited time this year. Sinclair has only played in seven games this season, but has registered five points in the limited work. Sinclair has recorded a game-winning goal, and currently leads the team in shooting percentage, scoring two goals on eight shots (25 percent).
Limited Work….Big Results 2
Sophomore Ryan Viselli has made the most of his opportunities as well. Viselli has only played in nine games this season, but has recorded three goals including a game winner and two on the power play. Viselli currently ranks second on the team in shooting percentage (21.4 percent).
Trouble At Home
Bowling Green has struggled against CCHA opponents this season, managing only three points so far this year. The Falcons have really struggled at home, going 0-4-0 so far this season. Bowling Green's last home CCHA win came against Lake Superior late last January, when the Falcons defeated the Lakers 2-1.
Scoring Punch
Freshman Ryan Carpenter and sophomore Bryce Williamson are now tied for the team lead in goals with sixth. That total also ranks both players tenth (tied with several other players) in the CCHA.
Carpenter Back On Track
After a three-point weekend, Carpenter's 14 points now give him the most points among freshmen in the CCHA. Carpenter is currently averaging a point-a-game, which is also a league best. Freshman Dan DeSalvo has made a solid impact as well, contributing seven points on the year. That total ranks eleventh in the CCHA.
Looking At Alaska Fairbanks
Alaska-Fairbanks have had a fairly balanced offensive attack so far this season, as four Nanooks have registered double-digit points this season. Sophomore Colton Beck leads the team in points (11), while junior Nik Yaremchuk leads the team in goals (6).
Senior Scott Greenham plays the majority of the games for Alaska between the pipes. Greenham, a second team CCHA pre-season selection, has started 12 games for the Nanooks. The Ontario native's record is currently 3-7-2 with a 2.57 goals-against-average, with a .893 save percentage. Greenham has also recorded one shutout this season.
The Nanooks have struggled on special teams this season. UAF currently ranks last in the league in both penalty kill (8.3 percent) and power play (79.1 percent).
