The Elmore, Ohio native went the distance for the first time in his career working towards his third win of the season. Wooten (3-6) finished his day just over 100 pitches through nine frames and allowed only one run on seven Akron hits. He walked and struck out a pair on the day. With Wooten's performance on Sunday he drops his earned run average to a season-low 3.76, which now leads the team for the lowest of the starting staff.
Wooten retired the Zips in order three times in Sunday's contest doing so in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings. He held the Akron four through nine batters to three hits in 19 plate appearances, a walk and a strikeout on the day. Only one Zip hitter had multiple hits, that being centerfielder Drew Turcosy with three.
Bowling Green (17-26, 10-11) separated itself from Akron (12-33, 5-16) in the top of the fifth inning with three runs, two of which were driven home by Falcon freshmen. A leadoff walk and single put runners on first and second, setting the plate for Jeremy Shay (Garden City, Mich.). The first-year Falcon stroked a single through the left side scoring Frank Berry (Virginia Beach, Va.) and breaking a 1-1 tie. After an error in the field loaded the bases for BGSU, senior Ryan Schlater (St. Paris, Ohio) hit a fly ball to right field deep enough to score Jon Berti (Troy, Mich.) from third base. Freshman Patrick Lancaster (Woodhaven, Mich.) posted the third Falcon run of the inning with a single to center field to put the Falcons up 4-1 over the visiting Zips.
Clay Duncan (Norwalk, Ohio) helped add an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a run-scoring single to put the Falcons up 5-1 for the duration of the game. The RBI single was a part of a 2-for-4 day for Duncan.
Duncan was one of five Falcons with a pair of hits on the day. Berry and Alex Davison (Grand Ledge, Mich.) each had a pair out of the one and two spots of the Falcon line up while Matt Pitzulo (Poland, Ohio) and Patrick Lancaster also chipped in with two hits on the day. Jon Berti went 1-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases on the day to increase his season total to sixteen.
Bowling Green pitchers have now tossed four complete games this season, matching a total for the last three seasons combined. The Falcons had not tossed that many complete games as a staff in a season since 2007 when Tyler Johnson threw all four complete games for BGSU that year.
With the win, Bowling Green takes the series from Akron and improves its chances to finish in the top three in the Mid-American Conference Eastern Division. Ohio and Miami both won their respective games on Sunday, keeping a three-game gap between BGSU and Ohio for the third spot in the division and a four-game discrepancy between the Falcons and RedHawks for second place. There are still six games remaining in the conference season. Bowling Green hosts Kent State in their next MAC series and finish the season on the road at Buffalo.
With classes and finals completed at the University, the Falcons jump back into mid-week, non-conference play with a home game versus Wright State at Warren Steller Field on Wednesday, May 11. The first pitch will be throw from “The Stell” at 3 p.m. The Brown and Orange then continue MAC play when they host Kent State for a three-game set beginning on Friday, May 13 for a 1 p.m. start.
