Falcons Hold Off Flyers In Home Opener
March 13, 2012 | Baseball
Box Score (BG 3, UD 2)
You couldn't have asked for a better home-opener on Tuesday for the Bowling Green State University baseball team. The sun was shining, the temperature was unseasonably warm, and the team picked up their fourth win of the season, a 3-2 victory over University of Dayton.
Left-handed pitcher Patrick Martin got the start for the Falcons, going four innings and only allowing one run. The Flyers got the scoring started in the top of the second, when first baseman A.J. Ryan hit a fly ball to deep center that carried over the wall on the windy afternoon.
The Falcons would not waste much time tying the game up, as Andrew Kubuski led off the bottom of the third with a perfectly executed drag bunt for the infield single. Kubuski would advance to second on a failed pickoff attempt by Matt Miller, the Dayton starter. Jesse Rait proceeded to double into right center. Rait would beat the throw to second, which would allow Kubuski to score on the play to tie the game at one.
The game would remain tied at one until the bottom of the sixth. Jake Thomas and Brandon Howard led off the inning with singles, which would spell the end of the day for Dayton starter Matt Miller. Jeremy Shay would sacrifice the runners to second and third, which allowed T.J. Losby to hit a deep fly ball to score Thomas from third, and give the Falcons the lead.
Jason Link went three innings in relief for the Falcons, not allowing a hit. He received the win, the first of his college career. Link, however, would give way to Ben Singer for the eighth inning. Singer would get two strikeouts, and the Falcons led 2-1 after the top of the eighth.
The Falcons would get an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, when a two-out single by T.J. Losby scored Patrick Lancaster, and give the Falcons a 3-1 lead.
Nick Bruns would come in for the Falcons and, despite giving up a solo home run to Flyer designated hitter Zach Stewart, would retire the Flyers and give the Falcons the 3-2 victory in the home-opener at Warren E. Steller Field. The save was the first of the season for Bruns and the Falcons.
The Falcons outhit the Flyers 10-8 on Tuesday, while both teams committed one error. The Falcons will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at Steller Field when they face the Pioneers of Malone at 3 pm.
