
Baseball Wins First MAC Road Game At Miami, 7-2

The Bowling Green State University baseball team picked up a 7-2 win at Miami University on Friday night. The win was the first road win in MAC play for the Falcons this season. Matt Malewitz picked up the win, improving his season record to 3-3 on the season. With the win, the Falcons improve to 16-21, 5-8 in the MAC. Miami falls to 18-20 on the year, and 4-9 in the MAC.
Matt Malewitz started on the mound for the Falcons going five strong innings for the win, his third of the season. Malewitz only allowed two runs on the evening, with just one of them being earned. Miami collected just two hits off the Falcon left-hander as well.
Miami got on the scoreboard right away in the first inning with a base hit by the second batter of the game, scoring the first run. Malewitz would work out of a first and third jam, however, to keep the RedHawks at just one run in the inning.
The Falcons would tie the game in the top of the second, when Jeremy Shay sent a towering home run over the centerfield wall on the first pitch of his at-bat. Malewitz would retire the RedHawks one,two, three in the bottom of the second, as the Falcons would take momentum to the plate in the top of the third.
Brandon Howard walked to leadoff the third inning. He was driven in by Jake Thomas's RBI triple to deep right centerfield, giving the Falcons a 2-1 lead. Thomas would score on an RBI single by Andrew Kubuski.
Bowling Green would extend the lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning on a Jake Thomas RBI single, scoring Brandon Howard. Howard got into scoring position with a one-out triple to left centerfield

Miami would climb back to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth on an error after a one-out triple. The runner would come into score on a shallow fly ball, but the throw from center skipped all the way to the backstop, allowing Miami to score their second run of the game.
Ben Singer would come on in relief of Malewitz for the top of the sixth inning, and he would go 2.2 innings of two hit baseball. He did not allow a run. In the bottom of the seventh, Brian Bien would make the play of the year thus far for the Falcons, ranging up the middle on a dive, getting up, and throwing out the speedy RedHawk hustling down the line. Singer would strike out the next two batters in the seventh.
The Falcons would tack on some insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning, scoring three runs for the 7-2 lead. In that eighth inning, Andrew Kubuski would get a huge two-out single up the middle to score Bien and Thomas. After Losby singled and Davison was hit by a pitch with Kubuski advancing to third, he would score the seventh run of the game on a wild pitch.
Patrick Martin would relieve Singer with runners on first and second and two outs in the eighth. Martin would throw one pitch in the inning, getting Matt Honchel to lineout to third to end the threat.
After the first two runners of the ninth reached for Miami, Martin would set the next three batters down in order, giving the Falcons the 7-2 victory.
Jake Thomas, T.J. Losby, and Andrew Kubuski all had multi-hit games, while Kubuski and Thomas also had multi-RBI games.
The Falcons and RedHawks will meet in game two at 3 pm tomorrow at McKie Field.
