Falcons Officially Eliminated From MAC Tournament Contention With Loss
Box Score
BUFFALO, N.Y.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by University at Buffalo on Thursday afternoon, 14-0. With the loss, the Falcons are officially eliminated from contention in the upcoming Mid-American Conference baseball tournament. The Falcons drop to 19-32 on the season and 8-17 in the MAC.
Buffalo poured it on the Falcons early on, scoring all 14 runs in the first five innings.
Trevor Blaylock got the start for the Falcons, lasting just two innings and picking up the loss. He surrendered seven runs and seven hits in his two-plus innings.
Facing a must-win situation, the Falcons were hurt by early defensive miscues. With one runner on and one batter out, the Falcons would drop a popup behind third base for the first error of the inning. A few pitches later, Blaylock would airmail an attempted pickoff throw into centerfield, allowing the runners to move up a base each. Buffalo would drive both runners home with a one-out double off the bat of last season's MAC player-of-the-year,Tom Murphy.
The Bulls would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the second with a two-RBI double in that frame as well. Buffalo would leave little doubt of the game's outcome after their five-run third inning put them ahead 9-0 early on.
Chris Miller would come on in relief for Blaylock, going two innings. He only allowed three hits, but struggled with his command, walking four Bulls.
He was removed in the top of the fifth for Jack Masin, who went three innings on the afternoon. Masin only was charged with one earned run on the day. The three innings comprised the longest outing of Masin's season.
Jake Overbeck finished out the game for BGSU, going one inning and allowing just a hit.
The Falcons only had seven hits on the afternoon, with Patrick Lancaster picking up two of them. Fred Sharp, Alex Davison, and Matt Pitzulo also picked up hits in pinch-hit situations.
The Falcons were shut-out for the seventh time in MAC play Thursday. They have been shut-out once in every MAC series only avoiding shut-outs in home series vs. Kent State and Toledo.
The Falcons and Bulls will continue their three game series tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
