Box Score
BUFFALO, N.Y.—The Falcons banged out 16 hits on Saturday afternoon, but left 11 runners on base on their way to an 8-5 loss to Buffalo. The game was the regular season finale for both teams. With the loss, the Falcons finish the season at 20-33 overall, and 9-18 in the MAC.
Bowling Green came in trying to keep Buffalo from the MAC Tournament, as the Falcons had officially been eliminated from contention of Thursday afternoon.
Six Falcons had multi-hit games, but it wouldn't be enough, as Buffalo made the most of their nine hits, turning them into eight runs, thanks in large part to poor Falcon defense.
The defense committed five errors on the afternoon, leading to four unearned runs. Senior left-hander Patrick Martin was tagged as the tough-luck loser, surrendering six runs (just two earned) in his 3.1 innings.
The Falcons took an early first inning lead in the game, but left the bases loaded. After a leadoff triple by Buffalo in the bottom of the first, the Falcons would commit three errors in the inning, leading to two Buffalo runs.
Each team would score a single run in the third inning, the Falcon run coming courtesy of a Tyler Wynn RBI double to bring Jake Thomas around from first to score on the play. The double was the first of two extra-base hits for Wynn in the ballgame.
BGSU would again regain the lead in the top of the fourth, putting two more runs on the board. A Matt Vannett double off the wall in left field got the inning started, and a Jesse Rait single would put runners on the corners with nobody out in the inning. Vannett and Rait would score on RBI's by Patrick Lancaster and Andrew Kubuski, giving the Falcons a 4-3 lead after 3.5 innings.
A dropped fly ball deep in the left centerfield gap would jumpstart a rally for the Bulls in the fourth, as the leadoff batter would advance all the way to third on the fourth Falcon error of the day. After an RBI groundout, the Falcons would commit their fifth error of the game, this time on another botched grounder. The Bulls would get three runs in the inning, knocking starter Patrick Martin out of the game in the process.
The Falcons would get to within one, at 6-5, with a Brian Bien RBI single to score fellow freshman, Jesse Rait.
Buffalo would put the dagger on the game in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out, two-run home run to put the Bulls ahead 8-5 after six.
The Falcons would get four hits in the final two innings of play, but leave all four runners on base as their comeback attempt fell short.
After Nick Bruns kept the Falcons alive with three strikeouts in his two innings of work, the Falcons had a chance to tie the game in the top of the ninth, but squandered an opportunity with two runners on and just one out.
With the win, Buffalo improves to 18-34 and 10-16 in the MAC. The Bulls also qualify for their first ever MAC tournament appearance with the win. The Falcons end their season at 20-33, 9-18 in the MAC.
