Falcons Conclude Home Schedule With Battle Of I75
May 09, 2012 | Baseball
The Bowling Green State University baseball team will play host to Toledo this weekend in a crucial, three-game, Mid-American Conference series. The Falcons, who currently sit two games out of a Mid-American Conference tournament spot, play their final three home games of the season at Steller Field this weekend. Bowling Green comes in with a record of 19-28, and a MAC mark of 8-13. Toledo enters with an overall record of 24-24, and 13-8 in the MAC.
Last Time Out
The Falcons traveled to Ypsilanti, Mich. for a three game series with the Eagles of Eastern Michigan last weekend. After falling on Friday and Saturday, the Falcons would salvage the series with a 9-3 win on Sunday afternoon. On Tuesday afternoon, an NCAA participant in 2011, Wright State, came to town and defeated the Falcons 9-2.
Toledo hosted Buffalo last weekend, falling in two-out-of-three to the Bulls. On Friday, Buffalo defeated the Rockets 5-1, before falling 3-0 the following day. The Bulls took the rubber-match from Toledo, winning 6-2 on Sunday. On Wednesday afternoon, the Rockets were beaten by Michigan State in East Lansing, 7-2.
A Look At The Falcons
The Falcons enter the weekend at 8-13 in the MAC, trailing both Miami and Akron by two games for the last MAC tournament spot. Since the Falcons lost the series to both teams this season, BGSU will essentially need to make up three games in the final two weeks of league play.
Bowling Green comes into the weekend with a team batting average of .285 on the year. The pitching staff holds an ERA of 4.78. The Falcons have been hurt by defensive struggles all season, committing 98 errors through 47 games this season.
Andrew Kubuski leads the Falcons offensively, with an average of .366. He has seven doubles, one triple, two home runs, and 28 RBI on the season. Brian Bien has quietly become one of Falcons best players since being inserted into the lineup as the starting second baseman. Bien is hitting .343 as a freshman, with seven stolen bases. T.J. Losby continues to anchor the middle of the lineup for head coach Danny Schmitz, leading the team with 33 RBI. Losby is the only Falcon to have appeared in all 47 games this season to date.
Nick Bruns and Ben Singer have been constants out of the bullpen for the Falcons this season. The two relievers have appeared in a combined 47 games this season, compiling a record of 5-4 with seven saves.
Matt Malewitz has stepped into the role as the Friday starter since the injury to Cody Apthorpe, compiling a record of 2-2 in that time. Malewitz has a record of 4-4 on the season with an ERA of 3.89.
Scouting Toledo
Toledo enters the weekend with a MAC ledger of 13-8, good for second place. The Rockets are coached by Cory Mee, who is in his ninth season. They enter the weekend with a batting average of .263 and a team ERA of 4.07.
Toledo is led offensively by Wes White, a sophomore infielder from Canal Winchester, Ohio. White is hitting .390 on the season.
