BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Bowling Green State University was able to get 23 players into Saturday's game against Central Michigan, dropping the middle game of the series to the Chippewas 16-2. Every Falcon position player had at least one at bat in the game, as the Orange and Brown dropped to 12-19 on the season and 4-6 in the Mid-American Conference.
Central Michigan scored in all but three innings in the game, the big inning being a seven-run second to take a commanding 9-1 lead after just two innings of play. CMU starter Pat Kaminska controlled the Falcons throughout the afternoon, tossing seven innings of five-hit baseball. He struck out five and allowed just one unearned run.
Trey Keeegan paced the Falcon offense on Saturday, as he went 2-for-3 after being inserted as a defensive replacement in the third inning. Andrew Kubuski, Addison Rospert, T.J. Losby, Greg Basalyga, and Tyler Greiner added hits for the Falcons. Greiner's single in the bottom of the seventh to right field was his first career hit.
Rob Zenas also made his first career appearance on the mound, tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball. He also did not allow a hit in the game, striking out two and walking just one batter. He replaced Kevin Delapaz, who went 0.2 innings before coming out of the game with an apparent shoulder injury.
Devin Daugherty, Ben Singer, and Chris Miller also made appearances on the mound for the Orange and Brown.
CMU got on the board with two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Falcons responded with a run of their own in the home half. Brian Bien reached to begin the game, and advanced to second on Kubuski's single. After Jeremy Shay reached on Central Michigan's second error of the inning, Bien would score on an RBI fielder's choice groundout by Losby to put the Falcons on the board.
The Chippewas would break the game open in the top of the second, scoring seven runs on the power of back-to-back home runs. With the bases loaded and one out, Daugherty would get a strikeout of CMU's Logan Regnier for the second out. But, on a 3-2 fastball to Tyler Huntey, he would surrender a grand slam to the Chippewas' catcher. On the very next pitch, Cody Leichman would hit a home run to left field to give Central Michigan a 7-1 lead and end Daugherty's day.
Bowling Green did not score again until the bottom of the eighth, when they already trailed 16-1. In the bottom of the eighth, third baseman Aaron Loconsole would deliver an RBI ground out with the bases loaded for the second run of the game.
Bowling Green will look to salvage the series on Sunday, when they host Central Michigan in the series' finale. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. at Warren E. Steller Field.
