Bats Explode In 17-8 Win Over Central Michigan
April 13, 2014 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Bowling Green State University baseball exploded for 17 runs on Sunday afternoon—including a nine-run seventh inning—to race past Central Michigan at Warren E. Steller Field. The Falcons were able to salvage the series, winning the finale 17-8. The 17 runs were the most a BGSU baseball team has scored since March 17, 2012 in a 22-2 win at Eastern Kentucky, and the most in a Mid-American Conference matchup since a 21-5 win on April 23, 2010 at Ohio. With the victory, the Orange and Brown improved their overall record to 13-19 and 5-7 in MAC play.
Despite a lopsided game which Bowling Green led at one point 17-3, it was Central Michigan who got on the board first in Sunday's game. The Chippewas would score a run in the top of the first inning to take a lead against BGSU hurler Andrew Lacinak with three singles in the frame.
The Orange and Brown would quickly respond in the bottom of the first. After Central Michigan starting pitcher Nick Deeg had retired the first two, he would issue a two-out walk to first baseman Jeremy Shay. The Falcons would make him pay, as catcher T.J. Losby would line a pitch into the left-centerfield gap—just past the reach of the outstretched CMU centerfielder Nick Regnier—for an RBI triple to tie the game.
Both teams would be held scoreless over the next two innings, although it wouldn't be without scoring chances. Central Michigan and Bowling Green would each strand three runs over the next two frames, but the game remained tied into the fourth.
Lacinak picked up the win in the ballgame, improving his overall record to 3-3 on the season. He tossed 5.1 innings, scattering six hits. He struck out four Chippewa batters in the game while allowing just three earned runs.
The bottom of the fourth would begin an explosive stretch of offense for the Falcons, as they would score 16 runs over the next four innings to take control of the contest.
In the bottom of the fourth, BGSU took the lead for good with two runs. Patrick Lancaster and Logan Walker walked to start the inning, before Trey Keegan would double to score Lancaster and give the Falcons a 2-1 lead. With one out and runners on second and third, Brian Bien would lift a fly ball into medium right field. Logan Regnier would make the catch and fire home as Walker barreled towards the plate. Regnier's throw would be just up the line. Walker would slide head first and just beat the throw to increase the lead to 3-1.
In the bottom of the fifth the Falcons continued a strong day at the plate. Losby would hit a chopper over the third baseman's head to begin the inning, and he was followed by a slow roller off the bat of Brandon Howard which the speedy third baseman would beat out for an infield single. Lancaster would fly out to right in the next at bat, but on the play Losby would slide into third safely to put Falcons on the corners with one out.
Walker would make Central Michigan pay. On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Walker would hit a towering fly ball down the left field line. It would stay fair for a three-run home run to give the Falcons a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
After two balls to Keegan, the Falcons' designated hitter in the game, he would make it back-to-back home runs with a solo shot to left field.
CMU would score two more runs in the top of the sixth to close the lead to 7-3, forcing the Falcons to turn to Ethan McKenney in the bullpen.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Falcons would get a run back. Howard would double into the right-center gap on a 3-2 pitch. He was followed by a hard line drive off the bat of Lancaster, one that couldn't be handled by CMU shortstop Morgan Oliver. The ball would trickle away from Oliver enough to allow Howard to score all the way from second on the play.
Leading 8-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Falcons would send 15 batters to the plate against four Central Michigan pitchers, putting up a nine-spot to take a commanding 17-3 lead.
Shay would make the Chippewas pay for two errors early in the inning, clearing the bases with a double to centerfield to give the Falcons an 11-3 lead with nobody out. A Howard sacrifice bunt would increase the Falcon lead to 12-3, and a Rait walk with the bases loaded would give the Orange and Brown a 13-3 lead. Bien would single home two runners to put the Falcons on top 15-3. RBI singles by Thomas and Shay would follow to put the margin at 14, with the Falcons leading 17-3.
The Chippewas would score five runs over the final two innings to make the final score 17-8, but there was never a chance at a comeback on Sunday.
Bowling Green will return to the diamond on Tuesday, when they are scheduled to host University of Findlay for a midweek matchup. The Falcons and Oilers are setd for a 3:05 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday.
