MUNCIE, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader on Saturday (April 15) afternoon by Ball State University. Both games of the twin bill were played at BSU's Ball Diamond. Ball State took the first game of the day, 23-5, before coming from behind to win the second game by a score of 13-6.
Bowling Green falls to 9-22 on the season with the loss. The Falcons are 4-8 in Mid-American Conference play. Ball State is on a seven-game winning streak. The Cardinals are 18-18 on the season, and 6-6 in conference play.
"I thought that we played very hard yesterday, but we did not bring the same focus today, and we didn't execute well at all," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "Today was huge for our season, and we just weren't good enough in any phase. We still have half the MAC season remaining, and we'll need to be much better if we want to be playing for anything down the stretch."
Five different Falcons scored runs in the first game, while Randy Righter went 1-for-3 with three RBI. Greg Basalyga, who now has 20 RBI on the season, knocked in another run for the Orange and Brown.
Ball State churned out 19 hits, and had five players register multiple hits in their 23-run outburst. The Cardinals scored in six innings, and in five of the innings, Ball State plated at least three runs.
The second game got off to a great start for the Falcons, as Bowling Green put up a four spot in the top of the first to take a 4-0 lead. Cam Daugherty crushed a two-run home run, and then with two strikes and two outs, Jeff Scott scored two with a single.
However, Ball State tied the game with a single run in the first, and a three spot in the second. The Cardinals then took a commanding 11-4 lead with a seven-run third inning. The Falcons plated single runs in the fourth and eighth, but the Ball State offense was too much to overcome.
The Cardinals out-hit Bowling Green, 14-8, in the contest, and yet again had five Falcons with at least two hits. Scott and Daugherty each had two hits, two RBI, and scored one run apiece.
Bowling Green heads to Youngstown State on Wednesday (April 19) for a 5 p.m. first pitch. The Penguins picked up the win in the first game of the season at Steller Field by a score of 3-1 on March 28. Bowling Green then welcomes Central Michigan to The Stell for a three-game series over April 21-23.Â
