WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by Marshall University, 7-6, Sunday (Feb. 23) afternoon. The game was a part of the Hughes Brothers Challenge, which was hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
The Falcons jumped out to a 5-1 lead by scoring five runs in the third. The inning was capped by consecutive two-run doubles from Adam Furnas and Kyle Gurney. Trent Farquhar also had a two-RBI day for Bowling Green. Gurney and Jake Wilson led the Falcons with two hits apiece.
Marshall used a five-run fifth to reclaim the lead. In the ninth inning, Furnas reached third base with two outs, but a fly out ended the ballgame. Furnas worked a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then moved to third on a ground out.
Jeremy Spezia and Rigo Ramos worked scoreless relief appearances for the Orange and Brown. Spezia tossed 1.2 innings, while Ramos did not allow a hit across 2.0 innings on the bump.
