September 13, 2020 | Women's Track and Field
Bowling Green, Ohio -- For a week, we asked our fans to vote for their favorite student-athletes of the past 20 years. Throughout the month of September, we will reveal one selection at a time each weekday over a five-week stretch. Today, we highlight your No. 15 choice for the top student-athlete of the past 20 years, track and field All-American Brooke Pleger!
15. Brooke Pleger (2011 - 2015)
Â
Originally from Saline, Mich., Brooke Pleger owns a lot of real estate in BGSU's track and field record book.
Â
Pleger's success in the weight and hammer throws was unrivaled during her time at BGSU. She owns each of the top 10 hammer throws in BGSU history, and was named to the Academic All-MAC team three consecutive years. Additionally, she is the only female athlete in BGSU Athletics History to be named an All-American three times.
Â
She won the weight throw event three times during her indoor sophomore season in 2012, after opening the year with a first-place finish at the EMU Holiday Eagle Meet with a toss of 59-feet-8.25. She also won the Bowling Green Opener as well as the Simmons-Harvey Invitational. In the outdoor season, Pleger was named First Team All-MAC after posting one of the greatest seasons in BGSU women's track and field history, where she earned her first All-American honors and placed seventh in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division I Women's Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. She became the first BGSU athlete to win an event at a regional championship as well, throwing 210-1 to place first at the NCAA East Region Preliminary and qualify for the NCAA National Championship.
Â
Pleger's junior campaign included another school record when she finished second at the GVSU Big Meet, with a weight toss of 67-10.25. She also won the Kent State Tune-Up and the Tom Wright Open before placing fourth in the weight throw at the MAC Championships with a toss of 66-feet-5.25. In her outdoor season, she placed third at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships with a throw of 211-feet-6, and earned her second All-American honors. She was also named Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Additionally, she was the No. 2 seed at the NCAA National Championships, won the All-Ohio Championship and MAC Championship, and threw a personal best 223-0 at the Toledo Invitational, a mark that moved her into 10th place all-time among American collegiate hammer throwers.
Â
Pleger's senior campaign was the conclusion to a historic run, where she finished the indoor season by breaking her own record and finishing fourth in the MAC Championships in the weight toss, missing the NCAA National Championships by less than three inches. She broke her own school record at the Akron Invitational as well, with a toss of 68-feet-2.5. In the outdoor season, she placed third in the country at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, setting herself apart from any other female athlete in BGSU history with her third All-American honors. She was also named the MAC's Most Outstanding Field Athlete for the second time in her career. Pleger set the school and MAC records at the MAC Championships with a throw of 228-9, before placing third at the NCAA National Championships.
