Box Score
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team – while playing a very attractive brand of ball – picked up a 7-1 victory over Miami University on Tuesday (May 4) afternoon. The rare midweek Mid-American Conference ballgame was played at Steller Field at Gary Haas Stadium. The contest served as the series opener for an irregular four-game conference series, which will resume with a doubleheader in BG on May 18.
The Falcons have now won two-straight league games over a three-day period. BGSU wrapped up its home series versus Ball State on Sunday (May 2) with an 8-5 win over the Cardinals. Bowling Green is now 11-14 in conference play in 2021. Miami drops to 12-13 within the MAC with the loss.
Kyle Gurney – who threw two would-be base stealers out – gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the third inning. Gurney's fifth homer of the season, which came with two outs, was launched to right-centerfield. Adam Fallon then clubbed a solo shot in the fourth to bump BG's advantage up to 3-0. Fallon's line-drive blast to right marked his second long ball of the campaign.
The RedHawks pulled a run back in the fourth, but the Falcons put up a four-spot in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Jack Krause scored two with a bases-loaded single. Fallon then doubled to bring home two more, extending the Bowling Green lead to 7-1.
Fallon had two hits and three RBI in the game. Krause and Gurney posted two RBI apiece. Dylan Dohanos, Andy Gaytan and Adam Furnas each recorded one hit for BGSU.
Bowling Green received a dominant start from freshman Landon Willeman. In his first-career start, the righty went 6.0 innings, surrendering just one run on four hits while striking out six batters. The native of Napoleon, Ohio issued just two free passes on the afternoon.
An experienced trio of Will MacLean, Nathan Lohmeier and Jeremy Spezia shut the door on the RedHawks. MacLean bridged the gap nicely, logging 1.1 shutout innings. Lohmeier struck out two in one perfect inning on the bump, and then Spezia set down the final two batters of the contest, ending the game with a strikeout.
COACH HALLOCK QUOTE
"Today was as complete of a game as we have played all year. That's the level of baseball we are capable of playing. Our players did outstanding today with their approach, energy and execution. I'm really happy for them.
"Gurney and Fallon's home runs were good swings on timed up fastballs. For young players to do that, it's huge. They're confident players and play fearless, which gives others a lot of trust in them. We got the four-spot late to put it away by stringing some quality at bats together and becoming tough outs. Jack Krause put together some big at bats from the five hole and when he's going well it makes our offense multidimensional. Defensively, we continued to be sound and play that half of the game at a high level. We are tough to beat when the defense is flying around like today.
"The story of today was Landon Willeman. It was not in our minds to have him go six innings, but it was definitely in his plans. His hometown down Route 6 west should be very proud of him in his first collegiate start. Will MacLean had great stuff today and that seventh inning zero was the biggest spot in the game for us. So for him to get through it so well was big for our offense to keep adding to the lead. Lohmeier and Spezia were electric finishing the game for the last five outs, and that's what we expect them to be the rest of the way."
