Falcons’ Sunday Comeback Bid Falls Just Short

Huskies avoid series sweep with 6-5 win
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team nearly came all the way back to erase a five-run deficit on Sunday afternoon (May 14), but the Falcons fell just short as Northern Illinois University held on for a 6-5 win at Steller Field.
The win enabled the Huskies (9-40, 5-21 Mid-American Conference) to avoid being swept in the three-game weekend series. The Falcons (18-29, 11-16 MAC) downed Northern by scores of 21-1 on Friday and 5-4 in 10 innings on Saturday.
NIU scored twice in the first inning and three times in the second, and the visitors still led by a 5-1 count before a bases-loaded triple by Jack Krause made it a one-run game in the sixth.
The Huskies got a run back in the top of the eighth, and BGSU missed an opportunity to cut in to the lead in the bottom of that inning, leaving the bases loaded. In the ninth, Adam Fallon's two-out triple got the Falcons within one run once again. But, with the tying run on third base, a line drive was caught by the first baseman to give NIU the win.
Fallon went 3-for-4 with two triples, a walk and two runs scored, while Krause drove in four of the Falcons' five runs in the game.
As a team, the Falcons had four triples in Sunday's contest.
On the mound, three BGSU relievers – Luke Krouse, Isaiah Seidel and Peyton Wilson – combined to allow just one run over the final 7 2/3 innings.

NOTE OF THE DAY
• Jack Krause had a bases-loaded triple for the second consecutive day. He also had a three-base hit to drive in three runs in Saturday's win over NIU.
• Krause, who entered Saturday's game with a total of two RBI on the season, has driven in seven runs over the last two days.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Huskies turned walks into runs in the game's early innings. Northern scored two runs without any hits in the top of the first, as after three of the first four hitters walked, a wild pitch scored one run and a sacrifice fly plated another.
• The second inning saw Malik Peters lead off with a double for the visitors, with Jake Nelson hit by a Jacob Turner pitch. Two more Huskie hitters walked in the inning, and two runs crossed the plate via a wild pitch, before an Aaron Harper single gave NIU a 5-0 lead.
• BGSU got a run back in the bottom of the second, when Adam Fallon tripled to right-center before scoring on a Jack Krause sacrifice fly.
• NIU starter Jacob Draeger allowed just one run and four hits in five innings of work. Tommy Meyer replaced Draeger to begin the sixth, and BGSU scored three runs against the reliever. Tyler Ross led off with a walk, and Nathan Rose's one-out single put runners at the corners.
• A four-pitch walk to Fallon loaded the bases, but Meyer responded with a strikeout for the second out of the inning. Krause, however, roped a ball to right for a three-run triple, cutting the Huskies' lead to 5-4.
• The Huskies put two runners on base against Isaiah Siedel with one out in the seventh, but the Falcon hurler got a fly ball to left for the second out, then struck ont Peters on three pitches to end the threat.
• The Falcon seventh saw Kyle Gurney and Ross draw back-to-back one-out walks before advancing on a two-out wild pitch, but a ground ball to short ended the inning.
• NIU got an insurance run in the eighth on a Tyler Thierry single, a sac bunt and a base hit by Andre Demetral.
• The BG eighth saw Mason Montgomery walk on four pitches, before Krause was hit by a Brandon Doty pitch. DJ Hess came on for the Huskies and got a strikeout for the second out, but then walked Sam Seidel to load the bases. Hess recovered, however, to get an inning-ending strikeout.
• The BG ninth saw Hess retire the first two batters, but Rose drew a walk, and Fallon tripled to right-center. But, with a potential tying run just 90 feet away, a Justin Fugitt line drive found the glove of first baseman Andrew Smart, and Smart held on as the Huskies held on for the win.
