BGSU’s 34 Runs Second-Most In Program History, Most In A MAC Game
The Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a run in each of the first two innings, but a three-run second put Ball State in front 3-2. The Falcons struck for three in the top of the third, but Ball State tallied four in the bottom half for a 7-5 Ball State lead entering the fourth. The Falcons added two in the fourth to tie it and two more in the fifth to take the lead at 9-7. BGSU erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning before adding 14 in the eighth on their way to a 34-8 win.
In the game, Nathan Archer and Sam Seidel both broke the program record for at-bats in a game, each with eight. Both Archer and Seidel each hit two home runs with Garrett Wright adding another for five BGSU long balls on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the second at-bat of the game, Sam Seidel belted a solo home run to quickly put BGSU on the board with a 1-0 lead.
- The second inning started with a Jack Krause single. Gavin Ganun slapped a single to put runners at the corners before stealing second. Garrett Wright knocked a fly ball to center, scoring Krause.
- Ball State scored in the bottom of the second. A single and double put runners at second and third with a single scoring one and another single tying the game at 2-2. The Falcons traded a run for outs, turning a double play with Ball State taking a 3-2 lead.
- Seidel sent a shot to right to start the third inning for his second home run of the game, tying the score back up at 3-3.
- Later in the third, BGSU put together a two-out rally. Leighton Banjoff kicked it off with a single. Krause doubled down the left field line to score Banjoff to reclaim the lead. Brady Birchmeier traded places with Krause in the next at-bat with a double of his own to extend the score to 5-3.
- A grand slam in the bottom of the third swung the score to Ball State at 7-5.
- The Falcons answer once again came fast. Wright began the fourth inning with a single followed by a Nathan Archer home run to tie the game at 7-7.
- Wright continued his strong game, and weekend, with a solo home run in the fifth inning. Archer went back-to-back with Wright, launching his second home run of the day for a 9-7 BGSU lead.
- Banjoff started the sixth inning with a walk. A single for Krause put runners at the corners with a balk bringing Banjoff home to score, extending the lead to 10-7 and prompting a Ball State change on the mound.
- Walks to TJ Takats and Ganun loaded the bases with Wright drawing a walk to score Krause and Archer being hit by a pitch to score Takats for a 12-7 score, keeping the bases loaded with no outs in the sixth.
- After the pitching change for Ball State, the BGSU walk parade continued with DJ Newman drawing this time to score Ganun. David Silva stepped in as a pinch hitter and drew another walk to score Wright and Banjoff walked to score Archer, 15-7. Krause was able to log a single, scoring Silva and Newman to make it a 17-7 score at the end of the half inning.
- Ball State registered a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut into the lead, 17-8.
- After a scoreless seventh the Falcons struck in the eighth. Silva and Banjoff both walked before a single for Krause to score one. Takats followed with a single of his own to score another run for the Falcons.
- Ganun singled to load the bases with singles from Wright and Archer moving the runners from station to station. Seidel was hit by a pitch to add another run at 22-8.
- After a pitching change, Newman reached on a fielding error to score one before an RBI walk to Silva. Banjoff then singled through the left side for two more. Later in the inning, Takats singled to left, scoring another pair for a 28-8 score and another pitching change.
- After the change, Caden Parker had a pinch hit RBI single followed by a Zack Horky pinch hit walk. Archer singled to load the bases with Seidel hitting into an error for two more BGSU runs, 31-8.
- In the ninth inning, Parker drew a bases loaded walk followed by a two-RBI single for Cooper McKenzie as a pinch hitter for a 34-8 victory.
