Senior goaltender Nick Eno (Howell, Mich.) earned the start between the pipes for the Falcons and was tested throughout the contest, stopping 29-of-32 shots taken against him. He was peppered with 16 shots in the first period alone and saved 14 of those. He finished the night allowing three goals in 58:31 before being lifted for an extra attacker later in the contest.
Less than a week removed from scoring three power play goals in the team's exhibition match against Wilfrid Laurier (Oct. 3), the Falcons struck gold on the power play early in Friday night's game to get ahead of the Wolverines. Near the twelve minute mark of the first period, Jordan Samuels-Thomas (South Windsor, Conn.) scored the first goal of the 2010-11 season and of the Bergeron era to take a 1-0 lead. Off of a faceoff in the near-side circle in the Michigan zone, David Solway (Green Bay, Wisc.) swung the faceoff out to Samuels-Thomas who loaded the cannon and fired laser past Wolverine goaltender Shawn Hunwick.
Michigan went on to score four unanswered goals, their first coming on their own power play nearly two minutes removed from the Samuels-Thomas score. Following a Ryan Peltoma (Brainerd, Minn.) obstruction-hooking penalty, Matt Rust scored his second goal of the season on a backhand shot near the posts for the game-tying score.
David Wohlberg capped off the first period with a five-on-five score less than two minutes later. Louie Caporusso recorded his first of two assists on the score. At 15:14. Wohlberg's shot beat Eno stick-side for the 2-1 lead.
Michigan scored twice more to reach the 4-1 score. In the second period, Kevin Lynch led the Wolverine power play after Brett Mohler (Yorba Linda, Cali.) was called for goaltender interference. After acquiring the puck off of a Bowling Green possession, Michigan used pure speed to move the puck off the ice behind the Bowling Green defense, leading the Lynch goal.
Bowling Green's defense tightened up in the third period and Eno kept his team in the game with a large stand between the pipes. With four minutes remaining, Eno took faced three shots in a row getting a pad on two and receiving help from freshman forward, Andrew Wallace (Bedford, Nova Scotia) with a big block out in front of the net. The Falcons then lifted Eno out of net for an extra attacker but failed to score, letting up an empty-net goal with 16 seconds by Carl Hagelin remained to seal the victory for Michigan, once and for all.
The win marked the 700th of Michigan head coach Red Berenson's career. Michigan earned its first win of the season and stands at 1-0-1, 1-0-0 (CCHA). Bowling Green in its first action under Chris Bergeron as head coach takes the loss and is 0-1-0.
The Wolverines and Falcons will meet again on Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. EST for the series finale at the BGSU Ice Arena. Coverage of the game will be provided through LIVE STATS, free online streaming audio or video via the America One Network (subject to fees).
