Falcons Tie Again, Beaten in Second Straight Shootout
December 04, 2010 | Ice Hockey
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- Bowling Green and Lake Superior nearly replicated their Friday night performance when the two teams once again skated to a 1-1 tie. Also like Friday night, the Falcons and Lakers took their game into a shootout for the right to the extra point to the conference standings. Saturday night's result mirrored the previous night as well when Lake Superior scored on its final shooter to take the decision, 2-1.

It took four skaters on each side to decide the winner of the shootout, Saturday night. Bowling Green's Jordan Samuels-Thomas (So., South Windsor, Conn.) again led off with a dike to the near side then attempt to find a hole near the far post. His shot was tossed aside by Laker goaltender Kevin Kapalka. The Lakers' Chad Nehring also failed on his first attempt, sending his shot high and wide after being deflected by BGSU goaltender, Andrew Hammond (So., Surrey, British Columbia).
Round two featured BGSU sophomore Marc Rodriguez (Aurora, Ill.) paired with LSSU forward Domenic Monardo. Each made their attempts, both on moves that caught each goaltender on their heels. Rodriguez faked to the far post before firing a backhand shot through the five-hole of Kapalka. Monardo kept Hammond guessing through his entire approach to the net before shooting top shelf and converting his try.
David Solway (Sr., Green Bay, Wisc.) and Ben Power both had their shots saved by each opposing goaltender, requiring an extra shoot from both teams to break the 1-1 tie. Bowling Green selected defenseman Ryan Peltoma (So., Brainerd, Minn.) who put a powerful shot on goal. Kapalka stopped the shot but fell backward into the netting, but kept the puck from crossing the red line. Lake Superior sent Will Acton to center ice to break the tie and with a top-shelf, glove-side shot on Hammond, he did just that, in effect giving Lake Superior the shootout victory.
Bowling Green maintained their success on special teams converting its only power play attempt with its opening goal by junior James McIntosh (Holland Landing, Ontario). The penalty kill unit was also perfect on the night, downing each of the Lakers' two power play chances.
On the Falcons' power-play goal they used a pass through the slot from David Solway to McIntosh to convert the opportunity. Solway's pass was on the money and caught his teammate in stride leading to a shot into a wide open Laker cage for the score at 3:29 in the second period. Marc Rodriguez also picked up an assist on the play, his second of the weekend.
Replicating the beginning of Friday's third period, the Falcons also lost their one goal lead to the Lakers. Shortly after killing off Lake Superior's second power play of the night, the Lakers scored while skating five-on-five in the fifth minute of the third period. Taking a pass from fellow defenseman Matt Bruneteau, Kyle Haines stationed himself inside of the blue line on the near side of the ice and fired a screamer into the Falcon net, beating Falcon goaltender Andrew Hammond.
The pressure mounted from the LSSU side when the Lakers began closing the gap in the shots on goal category. Once down 23-10 after two periods of play, Lake Superior fired ten shots on Hammond as opposed to Bowling Green's three through the first ten minutes of the third period.
Saturday night's game almost didn't make it to overtime when Lake Superior believed to have scored a goal on when Domenic Monardo put on a shot that took a second to free up out in the crease. Right before Andrew Perrault pounded home the rebound, an official blew his whistle, blowing the play dead prior to the goal being scored.
Bowling Green also had its opportunity to end the game when McIntosh nearly scored his second of the game. With approximately 20 seconds remaining left in the overtime period, the junior stationed himself inside the near faceoff circle and ripped a slap shot on goal. Kapalka made the initial save but the puck popped free of his control and floated up and over the top cross bar of the Laker cage. It was the last shot attempt for either team before the ensuing shootout commenced.
The Falcons held Lake Superior scoreless through two periods, Saturday night. Twice before this season has BGSU done that, once in their shutout win at Clarkson and in 3-2 victory over Notre Dame.
With their 33 shots on goal to the Lakers' 30, the Falcons outshot their opponent for the fourth straight game. They are 1-1-2 in those games. Bowling Green's Andrew Hammond stopped 29-of-30 shots on the night while Kapalka stopped 32-of-33 BGSU shots. The shootout loss was the first of Hammond's career after going 2-0 last season.
The road trip to Sault Sainte Marie, Mich. was the final away series before the holiday break for Bowling Green (6-10-2, 2-8-2-0). The Falcons will host the Ohio State Buckeyes next weekend (Dec. 10-11) at the BGSU Ice Arena, both games beginning at 7:05 p.m. EST.
