BGSU game notes
LAST TIME OUT
After losing four straight between April 4 and April 10, the Falcons have turned things around and have won five consecutive games and six of their last seven games dating back to April 11 versus Ball State. The Falcons most recently completed a sweep of arch-rival Toledo in three-games to begin to major swing of momentum for the team. In mid-week, non-conference action the Falcons beat a very notable Dayton Flyer team, 6-3, and beat down MAC-West foe Western Michigan, 19-4 on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
THE SERIES - FALCONS vs. BOBCATS
Dating back to 1952, the Falcons and Bobcats have met a total of 141 times. Ohio has the edge in the all-time series as Bowling Green is 60-80-1 against the Bobcats over the last 57 years. Bowling Green has won the last three series these teams have played, having swept the Green and White in regular-season action the last two years. In 2008, BGSU and OU met five times, thrice in the regular-season and twice in the Mid-American Conference Tournament (Chillicothe, Ohio). Bowling Green defeated OU 5-4 in the opening round of the tournament but lost, 7-3, in 13 innings in an elimination game two games later.

BOTTOM OF THE ORDER GETTIN' ER DONE
In the last five games the six-seven-eight-nine hitters in the Falcons lineups have been ripping the cover off of the ball. The area of the lineup has batted an outstanding .600 (36-for-60) from the plate against the likes of Toledo, Dayton and Western Michigan (4/16-4/21). They have accounted for 26 runs and 31 RBI in that time. In the Toledo series alone (4/16-4/18), the six through nine hitters went 24-for-43 (.558), scored 17 times, recorded 20 RBI and drew six walks in their sweep of the Rockets.
TOP TWO SKIPPERS IN THE MAC WINS TO FACE OFF
This weekend (4/23-4/25) when Bowling Green travels to Athens, Ohio to play Ohio University, two of the most storied head coaches will be facing off against each other for the 54th, 55th and 56th times. The overall series between Bowling Green's Danny Schmitz and Ohio's Joe Carbone is near-even. Scmitz and the Falcons hold a 27-26 record against Carbone's Bobcats since Schmitz took the Falcons' head coaching position in 1990. The Falcons have had more success in recent years with a 9-2 record over the last three seasons and swept the last two regular-season series. Schmitz (xxx) and Carbone (xxx) are both in the 500-Win Club and both rank in the top-five in the all-time MAC wins list. Carbone ranks second on that list with 348 while Schmitz is fifth with 271 conference victories.
EARLY OUTBURSTS LEAD TO FALCON “W”s
In their five-game winning streak, the Falcons have made a habit of scoring lots and scoring early. In the first three innings of the last five games, BGSU has scored 34 times to average at least two runs per inning in the first three innings. They have outscored the competition over the first three frames 34-9 in the last five games, as well. In that five-game span, the Falcons had scored only 23 runs from innings four through nine and eight of those came against Western Michigan (4/21).
P. O'BRIEN EMERGING AS 'GO-TO' RELIEVER
Typically a freshman is the last person you want to be your bolster in the bullpen, but Patrick O'Brien has performed so well this season he has been called upon more often and pitched more effectively in a relief role than his Falcon teammates. In the team's last five games, O'Brien has been called upon four times and pitched 7.1 innings. In that time, he is 1-0, allowed only five hits, one walk and one run (unearned). He struck out five hitters in that time. On the year, he's appeared in 14 games, pitched 21 innings and possess a 4.71 earned run average.
BERTI ONE THREE-BAGGER AWAY
With his fourth inning triple against Dayton (4/20), Jon Berti tied his career-high with five triples on the season. That also ties his placeholder in BGSU history as second place for triples in a season, with five. Larry Arndt (1982) hold the single-season mark with six. With his five last season and this season, the sophomore is now in a four-way tie for fourth on the career triples list. Only Arndt (11), Chris Carden (1985-88, 12) and Jeff Groth (1976-79, 13) have more triples in their Falcon careers.
Note: Logan Meisler and TJ Blanton are second to Berti in triples in a career that are still active with seven, ranking just outside the top-ten list.
