THE STARTING FIVE - FIVE FACTS ON BGSU HOCKEY
(1) Head coaches Bob Daniels of Ferris State and Chris Bergeron of BGSU do share one connection outside of their longtime CCHA ties. Both were graduates of Miami University at some level and coached at MU at some point. Daniels received his Masters degree from Miami in sport organization in 1987 and was an assistant coach as a graduate assistant with the RedHawks during the 1986-87 season, prior to Bergeron's arrival as a player.
(2) The all-time series between the Bulldogs and the Falcons resides in favor of Bowling Green, 52-45-11. The Bulldogs have bested the Falcons over the last ten games, 6-4-0.
(3) Since making a position switch from forward to defense, junior James McIntosh has put up a 1-2-3 line and has a minus-one plus/minus rating in four games in his new role.
(4) Bowling Green finishes its non-conference slate with a 5-3-0 record with two overtime wins. Last year the Falcons went 1-5-0 in such games. The Falcons hadn't had five or more non-conference wins since the 2005-06 season when they went 5-3-0 that season.
(5) In a series that the Falcons play in directly after the new year since 2000, Bowling Green is a combined10-9-1. Over the last five years, BGSU is 5-5-0 in said games. Their last sweep of an opponent to open a new year was against Ohio State in a home-and-home series in 2005-06.
FORGET THE RANKINGS, BRING'EM ON!
As strong as CCHA teams are its no surprise that Bowling Green gets its fair share of chances to play a few here and there in a given season. To date, Bowling Green has played four teams while they were nationally ranked and will play their fifth this weekend when No. 20/RV Ferris State comes to town. In those games this season, BGSU is a combined 1-7-0 this season with their lone win over Notre Dame, 3-2 (Nov. 5). Currently, seven teams on the BGSU schedule are ranked in the USCHO.com top-20 and three more are receiving votes in the poll. In games against all ten teams currently in the USCHO.com poll, BGSU is 2-13-0 but two losses have been by one goal.
PREVIOUS CAREER-HIGHS BROKEN
Though many of the incoming freshmen are setting career highs as soon as they take the ice, many returning BGSU Falcons are also surpassing previous career marks, as well.
Wade Finegan: old highs (2g, 2a, 4p, 1ppg); new highs (4g, 3a, 7p, 2ppg)
Andrew Krelove: old high (1g); new high (2g)
James McIntosh: old highs (1g, 3a, 4p, 1ppg); new highs (5g, 4a, 9p, 2ppg)
Jerry Friesmuth: old high (1a); new high (2a)
Ryan Peltoma: old highs (0g, 1a); new highs (2g, 2a)
Marc Rodriguez: old highs (3g, 2a, 5a, 0ppg); old highs (6g, 8a, 14p, 2ppg)
Bobby Shea: no previous highs; new high (2a)
FALCONS ON TEARS
James McIntosh (Holland Landing, Ontario) and Marc Rodriguez (Aurora, Ill.) have had some recent success that has been the bright spot of the Falcons' offense lately. McIntosh, despite a position change, has scored in a point in four of his last five games including two goals and two assists. That four-game point streak was the longest of his career before it was snapped on Dec. 30 against Holy Cross.
Rodriguez is in the midst of his third three-game point streak this season alone and with a point on Friday would extend his current streak to a career-high four games. He scored goals in both games of the UConn Classic before the New Year and has scored a point in six of his last eight games.
Even captain David Solway (Green Bay, Wisc.) has been on a point scoring streak through December. The senior has recorded a goal and five assists dating back to Nov. 27 and over the seven games for a line of 1-5-6.
LINEUP SHAKEUP
The lineup took a bit of a shake up last night against the Ohio State Buckeyes when two players on the Falcon squad played a bit out of position. James McIntosh (Jr., Holland Landing, Ontario) was shifted to the defensive side of the puck after playing the first 18 games at his natural position, forward. The sizeable McIntosh has played in a handful of games as a defenseman over his first two years at BGSU when injuries mounted for the Falcons. Since moving to his new position this year, he has a 1-2-3 line and a minus-1 on-ice rating while committing a penalty in each of his last three games.
The gang of forwards also saw a new face amongst their lines when Bobby Shea (So., Harrison Twp., Mich.) swapped ends from his natural position of defense. To add some aggressive play to the offensive side of the puck, head coach Chris Bergeron has decided to experiment with Shea's aggressive style and add an offensive element to his game. With Shea lining up at forward on Friday night (Dec. 10), it marked the first time in his entire playing career at any level that he had played the forward position. Thusfar, Shea has played in three games and has an even on-ice rating but has committed four penalties in as much time. He has yet to record a point as a forward.
