Falcons over the Weekend
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost 5-1 to Michigan State Friday night, extending their current losing streak to three games. Five different players scored for the Spartans, while junior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 22 of 27 shots in the loss. The five goals allowed by the Falcons ties the high for the season, matching Ferris State's goal total against Bowling Green in a 5-3 Bulldog win on Nov. 5.
The Falcons dropped a 4-1 decision to Michigan State Saturday night, completing the Spartans weekend sweep. Michigan State registered three even-strength goals in the win, with one marker coming on the power play. Junior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 29 of 33 shots in the loss. The loss drops the Falcons overall record to 6-10-2 on the year, with a record of 1-10-1-1 in CCHA action. The win improves the Spartans record to 10-5-1 overall, with a record of 6-4-0-0 in conference play.
Finally Lighting The Lamp
Freshman Ted Pletsch's goal in the closing minutes of the first period Friday night ended Bowling Green's 138 minute scoreless streak, marking the Falcons first goal since Ryan Carpenter's game tying tally against Miami (Nov. 19).
It's Been A While
The Falcons have not defeated Michigan State since the 2008-09 season, when Bowling Green shut out the Spartans at the BGSU Ice Arena 4-0 (Feb. 21, 2009). The Falcons have failed to secure a regulation victory over the Spartans in eight attempts since their shutout victory in 2009. The only non-loss in that span was a 2-2 tie (Feb. 27, 2010) that eventually led to a Falcon shootout win.
The Last Time
The Falcons went 0-1-1-1 against Western Michigan last season, failing to secure a regulation win in both games in Kalamazoo last year. Bowling Green tied the Broncos 1-1 in the first contest, going on to defeat Western Michigan in a CCHA shootout. Ryan Viselli scored his first career goal in the game, while Andrew Hammond stopped 31 of 32 shots in the tie.
Bowling Green dropped a 3-1 decision to Western Michigan in the second game of the series. Jordan Samuels-Thomas scored the Falcons lone goal of the contest, while Andrew Hammond stopped 30 of 33 shots in the loss.
Take One Off The List
Of the 23 Falcon skaters to play in a game so far, 20 have registered at least one point. Only Max Grover, James McIntosh and Ryan Peltoma have not recorded a point this season. Freshman Ted Pletsch recorded his first career point Friday night with a goal against Michigan State.
A Tale Of Two Seniors
Senior Cameron Sinclair continues to make the most of his opportunities this year, scoring the Falcons' only goal Saturday night against Michigan State. Sinclair now has six points in only 11 games played this season. The only other senior on the roster is forward James McIntosh, who has yet to register a point this season. McIntsoh has also played in 11 games this season, and leads all current Falcons with 106 career games played.
Leading The Way
Sophomore Camden Wojtala leads Bowling Green with 10 assists this season, ranking in the top ten in the CCHA. Wojtala also leads all current Falcons in power-play goals (4), assists (21) and points (29).
CCHA At The Top
The CCHA has been well represented in the national rankings so far this year. Currently, 9-of-11 schools in the CCHA have received votes for top-20 recognition. The highest ranked team in the CCHA this week is conference leader Ohio State. The Buckeyes rank fourth in the nation, and currently hold a record of 9-2-1 in the conference, with a record of 12-3-1 overall. Bowling Green and Alaska-Fairbanks are the only schools in the CCHA not currently receiving votes.
Trouble In The Conference
Since Chris Bergeron took over the position of head coach at Bowling Green, the Falcons have struggled in the conference. The Falcons conference record this year currently sits at 1-10-1-1, with both non-losses coming on the road earlier in the season. Coach Bergeron's overall conference record sits at 4-31-5. Former Falcon coach Ron Mason holds the Bowling Green record with a conference winning percentage of 71.7 percent.
The Big Picture
Here is a quick look at the current Falcon leaders in career numbers:
Points: Cam Wojtala - 29
Goals: Bryce Williamson - 11
Assists: Cam Wojtala - 21
Penalty Minutes: Max Grover - 144
Games Played: James McIntosh - 106
Between The Pipes
Although the Falcons were unable to secure a regulation win against the Broncos last season, goaltender Andrew Hammond achieved fantastic numbers in both games last season. Hammond's career numbers against the Broncos include a 1.92 goals-against-average with a .938 save percentage.
Western Troubles
With such a large freshmen class, it comes as no surprise that the majority of the Falcons have yet to register a point against Western Michigan. Only six current Falcons have registered a point against the Broncos, including sophomore Ryan Viselli, who recorded his first career goal against Western Michigan last season. Senior James McIntosh leads all Falcons in games played (6) and points (4) against the Broncos. In fact, McIntosh has recorded more points against Western Michigan than any other school in the CCHA.
Looking At Western Michigan
Sophomores Shane Berschbach and Chase Balisy lead the charge for Western Michigan offensively, each collecting 14 points so far this season. Junior Dane Walters leads the team in goals (6), while reigning CCHA Defenseman of the Week Matt Tennyson leads all Bronco defenders with nine points.
Western Michigan has split time between both goaltenders for the majority of the season, with freshman Frank Slubowski getting the slight edge with nine starts. Slubowski also carries the edge in the majority of the stats, posting a 1.86 goals-against-average with a .912 save percentage and two shutouts.
The Broncos rank in the top five of the CCHA in both scoring offense (3.06) and scoring defense (2.12). Western Michigan has also been extremely disciplined this season, ranking second to last in the conference in penalty minutes (10.9).
The Broncos are middle of the pack on special teams, ranking just outside the top five in both conference categories.
