BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team tied Western Michigan 3-3 Friday night, overcoming a two-goal deficit with under five minutes to play in the third period. Junior Bobby Shea recorded two goals and an assist on the evening, while junior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 20-of-23 shots in the contest.
The first period looked like it was going to be a disaster for the Falcons, when freshman Adam Berkle was charged with a five-minute hitting from behind major at the 2:52 mark of the opening frame. The penalty included a game misconduct, sending Berkle to the locker room for the rest of the contest.
Bowling Green responded with a short-handed goal just 13 seconds into the penalty kill, when Shea broke in and lit the lamp for his second goal of the season.
Although the Falcons did kill off the five-minute major, the Broncos cashed in on another power-play opportunity later in the period. Junior Brett Beebe netted his third goal of the season, tying the tilt at one heading into the first intermission.
Western Michigan owned the second period, recording two goals in the frame, including another power-play tally at the 10:58 mark of the period. Senior J.J. Crew recorded the power-play goal for his second of the season, and eighteenth of his career.
The Broncos second goal of the frame came at even strength in the closing minutes of the stanza. Junior Trevor Elias scored his fifth goal of the season to push the Western Michigan lead to two.
Trailing 3-1 entering the final period, the Falcons pressured the Broncos end, doubling the Western Michigan shot total 8-4. The Falcons finally broke through Western Michigan freshman goaltender Frank Slubowski, on a shot from the point from freshman Marcus Perrier. The Ontario native's second goal of the season cut the Broncos' lead in half, putting the score at 3-2.
With just under a minute remaining, sophomore Ryan Viselli threw the puck on the Western Michigan net. The puck bounced over to Shea who netted his second goal of the contest, and tied the game 3-3.
Both teams were held scoreless in the overtime frame, so the contest was pushed to a CCHA shootout.
The Broncos tallied the only goal of the shootout exchange, earning an extra point in the CCHA standings.
Shea's three-point (2 G, 1A) performance sets a career high for goals and points in a game, and marks the first multi-goal game by a Bowling Green player this year.
Viselli's assist on the game-tying goal marks is first of the season, while sophomore Andrew Wallace set his own career marks for points (2) and assists (2) in a game.
The tie puts the Falcons overall record at 6-10-3, with a record of 1-10-2-1 in CCHA action. The tie puts the Broncos record at 8-4-5 overall, with a record of 6-4-3-3 in conference play.
The Falcons are back in action Saturday night in Kalamazoo for the second half of the home and home series. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
