Bowling Green defeated Ferris State Sunday night, dropping the Bulldogs 4-3 in overtime. The Falcons' victory clinched the best-of-three series for Bowling Green, earning a spot in the CCHA semifinals for the first time since 2000-2001. Freshman Dan DeSalvo scored three-straight tallies for the Falcons, pushing his playoff goal total to 10, a new CCHA record. Junior Andrew Hammond stopped 28-of-31 shots in the win, pushing his season win total to 14.
The Hot Hand
DeSalvo's three-goal effort marks the first Falcon to record a hat-trick since Derek Whitmore, in a 4-1 win against Western Michigan (Jan. 18, 2008) at the BGSU Ice Arena. DeSalvo now also holds the CCHA record for playoff goals (10), breaking the previous record of 8 held by three players. Former Michigan Wolverine Mike Knuble (1995), Bobby Reynolds (1988 - Michigan State) and Rick Brebant (1987 - Ohio State) previously held the record. DeSalvo had only scored four goals during the entire regular season.
First Of The Season
Freshman defensemen Connor Kucera scored the Falcons' first goal Saturday night, the first of his career. Sophomore defensemen Jake Sloat also scored his first goal of the season Saturday night, and second of his career. Sloat's goal is his first since Nov. 26, 2010 against Alabama Huntsville.
Seven Spot
The Falcons surrendered seven goals to Ferris State Saturday night, the most they have given up all season. The Falcons' previous high this season was six, given up in a loss to Western Michigan (Dec. 10) in Kalamazoo. The last time Bowling Green gave up seven goals or more in a game was against Miami (Feb. 13, 2010) in a 10-2 loss at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Carpenter
Freshman Ryan Carpenter is quietly riding a four-game point streak, dating back to the series-winning game against Northern Michigan. In that four game span, Carpenter has recorded seven points, including two goals and five assists. His four-game point streak is the longest current streak on the team.
DeSalvo Note 1
Freshman Dan DeSalvo's four-point night Sunday is the highest total of his young career, and his first career hat trick.
