Box Score
YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University baseball team desparately needed a win on Sunday afternoon, and they didn't disappoint. The Falcons took advantage of six Eastern Michigan errors on their way to a 9-3 win. Junior Nick Bruns picked up the win for the Falcons, moving his season record to 3-2. The Falcons improved to 19-27 on the year, and 8-13 in the MAC with the win.
The Falcons jumped on EMU starter Ryan Lavoie, taking advantage of two walks to begin the game, en route to a four-run first inning. After Jake Thomas and Logan Walker walked to leadoff the game, they would both advance a base on a wild pitch. Patrick Lancaster would single up the middle, and advance on a throwing error by the shortstop. After a T.J. Losby groundout moved Lancaster to third, the Falcons would get their third run of the game when Andrew Kubuski reached on a fielding error by the second baseman.
After Kubuski stole second base, he would be injured on the next pitch. On that play, Kubuski would slide head first back towards second base, in an attempt to beat the pickoff throw from the catcher. Unfortunately, Kubuski was kneed on the play, and would lay on the turf for several minutes. Kubuski was taken on a stretcher to the hospital, with his neck stabilized. **
Alex Davison would pinch run for Kubuski, and he would be driven in on the very next pitch, a single by Jeremy Shay. After just one-half inning, the Falcons led 4-0.
Eastern Michigan would get two runs back in the first, but Patrick Martin would get a big strikeout with the bases loaded to end the first inning.
With two runners on and nobody out in the third, Nick Bruns would come on in relief. Bruns, who served as the Saturday starter last season, proceeded to set the Eagles down one-two-three to hold the runners at first and second in the inning.
Bruns would go five innings—his longest outing of the season—for the win, striking out five and allowing just one run. After the Falcons added single runs in the sixth and seventh, Bruns would give way to sophomore Ben Singer with a 6-3 lead after seven innings of play.
The Falcons would tack on three insurance runs in the ninth, as Singer finished off the game for his first career save. Singer went two innings, striking out one, and allowing just one hit.
Brian Bien and Patrick Lancaster led the Falcons offensively on Sunday, as the Falcons banged out ten hits on the afternoon. Bien led the Falcons with three hits, while Lancaster had two on Sunday. Jeremy Shay also had two RBI, while scoring two runs on the afternoon.
The Falcons will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon, when they host the Wright State Raiders at Steller Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
**Kubuski returned to Oestrike Stadium to ride the bus home with the team on Sunday. He was diagnosed with a mild concussion and a broken nose.
