MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team split a doubleheader with Central Michigan on Saturday afternoon, earning the series win in the process. The Falcons won game one 9-5, while falling in game two 5-3. With the split, Bowling Green is now 6-16 (2-4 MAC) overall.
In game one, the Falcons got off to a quick 8-3 start after just five innings. T.J. Losby led BGSU in the first game, going 3-for-3 with two walks and two RBI.
In the first inning, Bowling Green scored two runs on three hits, giving Mike Frank an early lead. The Falcons would tack on two more runs in the second, grabbing a 4-0 lead after an inning and a half.
Frank picked up his first win of the season on Saturday, going 5.1 innings and striking out six.
The big inning for the Falcons came in the top of the fifth, when they scored three runs to go ahead 8-2.
In the ninth, with a 9-5 lead, Bowling Green turned to senior closer Nick Bruns with two runners on and nobody out. Bruns would get the first batter to line out to short, and Brian Bien would flip it to the bag at second for a huge double play. Bruns would close the game out with a fielder's choice ground out, securing the victory for the Falcons, and his third save of the season.
In the second game of the twinbill, CMU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning of play. Sophomore Trevor Blaylock would settle in from there, along with the rest of the pitching staff, as the Chippewas would not score again until the eighth inning.
The Falcons chipped into the lead in the top of the third, as Matt Smith scored all the way from first on a Jeremy Shay double. Smith had started the rally with the two outs.
BGSU would tie it in the top of the fourth, scoring two unearned runs thanks to a couple of Chippewa errors.
The game would remain tied into the bottom of the eighth, when Central Michigan would score two unearned runs for themselves. The costly play would prove to be a fielding error by the Falcons, which would open the door for CMU to take advantage of the extra out.
With a 5-3 lead in the ninth, CMU would retire the Falcons to salvage the series by winning the finale.
The split on Saturday allowed the Falcons to bounce back after a tough first weekend of MAC play, taking 2-of-3 on the road this weekend.
Bowling Green will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon at Michigan, before hosting Eastern Michigan next weekend in Mid-American Conference action.
