May 14, 2017 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was unable to sweep Western Michigan University on Sunday (May 14), as the Broncos defeated the Falcons by a score of 15-7 at Steller Field.
Prior to the game, seniors Greg Basalyga, Nick Glanzman, Tony Landi, Addison Rospert and C.J. Schildt were honored for their careers as Falcons. They were also recognized as being graduates of BGSU.
With the loss, Bowling Green concludes MAC play with a record of 9-15. The Falcons earned two more MAC wins than they did all of last season. BGSU is now 14-32 on the season. BGSU is still alive for a berth in the upcoming MAC Tournament, but the Falcons will now need lots of help. MAC play concludes next weekend. Tournament scenarios will be covered throughout the week.
"I feel bad for our guys. We played really hard this weekend, and did so many things right. This win would have been huge for us, and it's always hard losing on Senior Day," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "However, we stayed alive with two wins this weekend, and I'm proud of how we battled."
Western Michigan scored the first 10 runs of the ballgame, and cranked out a total of 16 hits. WMU scored two in the first, five in the second, three in the third, four in the sixth, and one in the ninth.
The Falcons stormed back, scoring five answered, but Western Michigan's four-run sixth put the game out of reach. On the day, Bowling Green scored four in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth.
Bowling Green registered 10 hits. Jake Wilson and Cam Daugherty led the Falcons with two hits. Bowling Green's other hits were notched by Justin Mott, Derek Drewes, Randy Righter, Greg Basalyga, Joe McGuinness, and Nick Glanzman.
Basalyga posted two RBI, running his total on the weekend to seven. Righter, Drewes and Mott drove in one run apiece for the Orange and Brown. Addison Rospert logged 0.2 innings, and did not allow an earned run. Nathan Lohmeier pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball.
Bowling Green hosts Dayton on Tuesday (May 16) at 3:05 p.m. The Falcons will then head to Elon, N.C. for a three-game set at Elon across May 18-19 to finish the regular season.
