Bowling Green, Ohio -- For a week, we asked our fans to vote for their favorite student-athletes of the past 20 years. Throughout the month of September, we will reveal one selection at a time each weekday over a five-week stretch. Today, we highlight your No. 11 choice for the top student-athlete of the past 20 years, football player Roger Lewis!
11. Roger Lewis (2014 - 2015)
Â
A native of Pickerington, Ohio, Roger Lewis made the most of his two years on the BGSU football team.
Â
Coming to BGSU from Jireh Prep in Matthews, N.C., Lewis' true freshman season in 2014 was a resounding success, as he started all 14 games for the Falcons and was named First Team All-MAC (the first true freshman to earn the honor since 1982). Lewis caught 73 passes for 1,093 yards and seven touchdowns, making him the first freshman in BGSU history to have over 1,000 receiving yards as a freshman. His 16 receptions in one game at Doyt L. Perry Stadium were a stadium record. Lewis caught four passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns in the Falcons' Camellia Bowl win over South Alabama on Dec. 20.
Â
In 2015, Lewis once again started all 14 games for the Falcons before declaring for the NFL Draft and being the first Falcon since Chris Jones after the 2012 season to participate in the NFL Combine. Lewis was named FWAA second team All-America, the first Falcon since Jones to earn that honor. He was also the first Falcon to be recognized as a third team Associated Press All-American since 1994. Additionally, he was honored by Sports Illustrated as an honorable mention All-American. For the 2015 season, Lewis ranked fifth in receptions (85), second in receiving yards (1,544), and second in touchdowns (16) in school history. He caught a touchdown in the Falcons' MAC Championship win over Northern Illinois and their loss to Georgia Southern in the GoDaddy Bowl game.
Â
Lewis is tenth in school history with 158 career receptions, and sixth in touchdowns with 23.
Â
Roger Lewis was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Giants in 2016, and is currently a free agent.
