September 15, 2020 | Ice Hockey
Bowling Green, Ohio -- For a week, we asked our fans to vote for their favorite student-athletes of the past 20 years. Throughout the month of September, we will reveal one selection at a time each weekday over a five-week stretch. Today, we highlight your No. 14 choice for the top student-athlete of the past 20 years, hockey goalie Andrew Hammond!
14. Andrew Hammond (2009 - 2012)
Â
A native of Surrey, British Columbia, Andrew "The Hamburglar" Hammond was a nightmare for opposing offenses on the ice.
Â
The beginning of Hammond's career came as a freshman in 2009-10, when he made 13 starts and had six games of 30 or more saves. This includes a spectacular performance against Nebraska-Omaha, in which he stopped 43 shots including all three shoot-out opportunities to propel the Falcons to a 1-0 victory.
Â
Hammond's sophomore season in 2010-11 saw him become the surprise player of the year for the Falcons. He started in 26 of the 27 games he played in, had a record of 6-17-3 on the season, and recorded his first career win and shutout against the Clarkson Golden Knights on Oct. 16. He recorded a season high 44 saves twice, with one being a 2-1 win in double overtime against Northern Michigan in game three of the CCHA Tournament after posting a shutout in game two. He concluded the season with a 2.67 goals-against average and a save percentage of .915, and was named the Jim Ruehl Best Defensive Player and Jim Sears Most Valuable Defensive Player awards by the team.
Â
In 2011-12, Hammond ended his BGSU hockey career on a high note, starting in all 44 games and setting the single-season record for minutes played with 2,615:18. His 2.73 goals-against average was the seventh-best single-season mark in program history, and stopping of 1,114 total shots was the second-highest single-season total in program history. Hammond made 54 saves in the team's 3-2 overtime win against Ferris State in the second round of the playoffs and then stopped 55 shots in 81:04 minutes against Michigan in the CCHA Semifinal game, falling one save short of tying the record. He finished the year with eight games of 30 saves or more, three games with 40 saves or more and two games with 50 saves or more.
Hammond was a central figure for that 2011-12 team's postseason success. The Falcons became the first ever No. 11 seed in CCHA history to advance to the tournament semifinals, beginning by defeating Northern Michigan in three games on the road. The Falcons then went to Ferris State, the No. 2 ranked team in the country, and again won in three games. In the semifinals, Hammond's jaw-dropping effort against Michigan kept the Falcons alive into the second overtime.
Â
Hammond now plays professional ice hockey for the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League while under contract to the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League. He previously played in the NHL for the Ottawa Senators and Colorado Avalanche. He rose to fame in 2014-15 when he was called up from the minors and led the Senators to an unthinkable 20-1-2 record to clinch a Stanley Cup playoff berth.Â
