BGSU Splits Doubleheader With RedHawks To Take Weekend Series

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team split the Sunday (March 26) doubleheader against the Miami (OH) RedHawks, taking the weekend series 2-1 after a win on Friday (March 24). The Falcons claimed the first game of the doubleheader in a 12-3 final, but the RedHawks evened the day for the split with a 6-2 score in game two. The win in game one matched the best home start for the Falcons since 2008, winning their first four at Steller Field this season. The doubleheader split moves Bowling Green to 8-13 on the season while being 4-5 within the Mid-American Conference.
In the first game of the day, Peyton Wilson recorded a strong start for the Falcons, fanning a career-high 10 over seven innings to match the longest outing of his college career on his way to his first win of the season on the mound. Landon Willeman took over from there, pitching two scoreless relief innings with a pair of strikeouts. The offense for BGSU was fueled by two Nathan Rose home runs as well as three RBI from Gavin Ganun. Sam Seidel added a round-trip knock as well, his first home run at Steller Field as a Falcon and second of the season.
As for the second game, the Bowling Green offense was highlighted by a two-run home run from Adam Fallon in the second inning, but it would end up being the only runs for the Orange and Brown. On the mound, both DJ Newman and Owen Recker produced scoreless appearances out of the bullpen, combining for five strikeouts over the last 2.1 innings of the game.

The Falcons will have Monday off before taking on Purdue Fort Wayne in a midweek matchup on Tuesday (March 28). The game is slated for a 3 p.m. first pitch and will conclude the home-and-home series between the Falcons and the Mastodons. BGSU won the first meeting this past Tuesday (March 21), topping Purdue Fort Wayne 8-6 at Steller Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE
- After a scoreless first inning, the Falcons put together a two-out rally to score the first runs of the game in the bottom of the second. Ryan Johnston drew a walk to start the rally before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error. That set up an RBI single by Gavin Ganun to tally the first run of the game.
- In the next at-bat, Sam Seidel sent his first home run at Steller Field as a Falcon over the fence, a two-run jack to to right to make it a 3-0 BGSU lead.
- The rally continued with Kyle Gurney reaching by a hit by pitch. Nathan Archer followed with an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Gurney to give the Falcons a 4-0 advantage through two innings.
- The Falcons maintained the momentum in the bottom of the third. DJ Newman led off with a single up the middle before taking both second and third on a wild pitch. Newman's baserunning setup an RBI single by Tyler Ross to extend the BGSU lead to 5-0.
- The Falcons struck again in the fifth inning. Newman began the inning by reaching on a hit by pitch. Ross followed with a single before both runners moved up on a Jack Krause sacrifice bunt. Ganun was able to bring both runners home with a single through the left side of the infield, pushing the BGSU lead to 7-0 through five.
- Bowling Green added two more in the sixth inning. Archer began the inning with a walk before Nathan Rose belted his third home of the season, making it a 9-0 lead for the Falcons.
- The RedHawks recorded their first run in the top of the seventh with a solo home run. Miami tallied three in the inning to make it a 9-3 score.
- In the eighth inning, Rose hit his second home run of the game, this time going to straightaway center, hitting it off the batter's eye to make it a 10-3 lead.
- The runs continued to score with Ross and Krause coming home in the inning. Both walked before stealing. A throwing error on the steal attempt allowed Ross to cross and a wild pitch followed to plate Krause, giving the Falcons the 12-3 advantage.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO
- Miami scored in the top of the first. With the bases loaded, a fielding error allowed the first run of the game to cross to make it 1-0 RedHawks.
- The Falcons responded in the bottom of the second. Nathan Rose hit a single up the middle for the first BGSU hit of the game. Adam Fallon capitalized on the opportunity with his third home run of the season, lacing a line drive over the fence in left center, giving the Orange and Brown a 2-1 advantage.
- The RedHawks responded with a run in the top of the third to knot it up at 2-2.
- A solo home run in the top of the fifth pushed the RedHawks ahead 3-2.
- Miami tallied three runs in the top half of the seventh to push their lead to 6-2.

FALCON STAT FACTS
- Winning game one, the Falcons win streak came to a close at five consecutive wins while also starting their home schedule 4-0. The 4-0 start at home marks the best for the program since 2008.
- Getting the start in game one, Peyton Wilson matched his longest start as a Falcon going seven innings. Wilson tallied 10 strikeouts in the game, the most of his collegiate career.
- Nathan Rose hit two home runs in the first game, his first multiple-home run game as a Falcon. Rose now has four home runs over the last four games. The four home runs also mark a new career-high for home runs in a single season after entering the season with three career home runs, hitting two last season and one in 2021.
- Rose also recorded a pair of hits in the second game of the doubleheader to extend his hitting streak to five games. Over the five game stretch, all at home, Rose is batting .391 (9-for-23) with 12 RBI, six runs scored, four home runs, two doubles and a triple.
- Kyle Gurney logged a base hit for the Falcons in each game of the doubleheader, extending his hit streak to seven games. During his streak, Gurney is batting .480 (12-for-25) with seven runs scored, seven walks drawn, five RBI, three doubles and a home run.
- Recording a home run in the second game of the day, Adam Fallon moved his season home run total to three, setting a new career-high for a single season and doubling his career tally to six.
- DJ Newman posted another complete day. In game one, Newman stole both second and third on one wild pitch and scored twice while going 1-for-4 at the plate. As for the second game, Newman came on in relief and tossed 1.1 innings for the Falcons, striking out three of the four outs recorded with him on the mound.
- Sam Seidel registered his second home run of the season in the first game, extending his on-base streak. However, he didn't get on base in the second game, closing out the streak at 13 games.
