THIS WEEK IN FALCON HOCKEY ...
Bowling Green travels for the second leg of its ongoing roadie to South Bend, Ind. to play the No. 10/10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (13-9-5, 13-6-3-2) this Friday and Saturday inside the Joyce Center Field House. This will be the last time the Falcons will play inside the facility before UND completes its newest facility and moves to its new home.
LAST TIME OUT... the Falcons traveled to Kalamazoo, Mich. and took two points out of the weekend against the Broncos. For the 11th time this season, the Falcons took a lead into the third period but again lost the advantage to take a tie out of regulation and an overtime period. Ryan Viselli's first career goal got the Falcons on the board in the second period, but it took a shootout for the Falcons to find the back of the net again when Marc Rodriguez tallied the only marker between the two teams, guiding them to a shootout win. No Falcon was more integral to the SOW than sophomore goaltender Andrew Hammond, who stopped 30 pucks and all three shootout attempts by WMU en route to their Friday night success. Saturday night, Hammond was back at it but allowed three goals to the Broncos while the BGSU offense sputtered in a 3-1 loss. Hammond stopped 31-of-34 shots against in the loss but strengthened his hold on the full-time starting position between the pipes. Bowling Green sophomore forward Jordan Samuels-Thomas was the second BGSU goal scorer, notching his team-leading eighth tally of the season.
NEXT UP... the Falcons will bring the action back to the BGSU Ice Arena for their final home series of the year. Bowling Green will host the Northern Michigan Wildcats, whom the Falcons split a series with earlier this year to open cluster play. Those games will be played on Friday (Feb. 18) and Saturday (Feb. 19), both games beginning at 7:05 p.m. Saturday's game is also senior night and will honor David Solway, Nick Eno, Andrew Krelove and Wade Finegan in their last game played at home.
THE STARTING FIVE - Five Facts On BGSU Hockey
(1) Ryan Viselli is one of the hottest skaters on the ice for the Falcons. After missing a game following an injury, he exploded the following weekend for three points, all by assist, against LSSU. He then scored his first collegiate goal against WMU in a 1-1 tie before having the three-game scoring streak broken the following day.
(2) BGSU split with UND in their last series in BG, but the Irish have won nine of the last ten games at the Joyce Center and have been unbeaten in ten games there (9-0-1). The Falcons' all-time record at the Joyce Center is 12-27-5.
(3) Of the three games taken to a shootout for BGSU, all three have been by 1-1 final scores and on the road.
(4) If the season ended today, the Falcons would be heading back to the Yukon State (Alaska) for the first round of the CCHA playoffs. The Falcons will likely hold the 11th seed in the conference and will travel to whomever holds the sixth seed, at season's end.
(5) Three BGSU Falcons have been nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, college hockey's most prestigious honor. David Solway, Jordan Samuels-Thomas and Marc Rodriguez are included in a pool of more than 60 hockey players across the nation to be voted on by the fans. FALCONS EARN FIRST SHOOTOUT WIN
It took three attempts but the Falcons notched their first shoot out win of the season on Feb. 4 against Western Michigan. After a 1-1 tie following 65 minutes of play, Marc Rodriguez scored the lone marker for the Falcons, accompanying Andrew Hammond's shutout in the shootout to combine for a 1-0, “SOW”. The Falcons had lost their previous two shootouts of the season, both against Lake Superior in their first meeting back in November.
HAMMOND HAS STRONGHOLD ON STARTING JOB
Head coach Chris Bergeron had played with the two-goalie system for 14 weekends before he decided to abondon it in favor of sophomore goaltender Andrew Hammond. After allowing three goals in a period-plus of play against Lake Superior on Jan. 28, Hammond was summoned to take the lead between the pipes and hasn't relinquished that role yet. Last weekend, Bergeron gave Hammond both night's starts, the first time he had given either goaltender consecutive starts all season. Though the decision isn't final and competition is open the rest of the season for the starting job, Hammond's line over the last four games are encouraging that he is the favorite for the rest of the year. Over 217:31 in his last four games, he has allowed only six goals, posting a 1.66 GAA and a .943 save percentage while obtaining a 1-1-1-1 record.
VISELLI SCORES FIRST CAREER GOAL
After 21 games this season, freshman Ryan Viselli scored his first career goal against the Western Michigan Broncos in the team's 1-1 tie on Feb. 4. He becomes the eighth freshman of the ten-man freshman class (nine skaters) to score his first goal and the ninth overall to score their first this season. Prior to his goal, Viselli notched seven assists. He now has the third-most point among the freshman class.
IF THE SEASON ENDED TODAY ...
With the new 11-team tournament format in place, the first five teams earn a bye for the first round leaving the remaining six teams to engage in first-round action at the sixth, seventh and eighth seeds' host sites, respectively. Holding the 11th seed, the Falcons would then head out to Fairbanks, Alaska for the first round of the CCHA Tournament. Bowling Green was swept in two 4-1 decisions in October by the Nanooks in their last meeting.
