Throughout the month of September, we will reveal one selection at a time each weekday over a five-week stretch. Today, we highlight your No. 5 choice for the top student-athlete of the past 20 years, football player Freddie Barnes!
5. Freddie Barnes (2006 - 2009)
A native of Chicago, Ill., Freddie Barnes set the NCAA record for receptions in a season, as well as a number of school records for the BGSU football team as he left opposing cornerbacks in the rear view mirror.
After a freshman season playing sparingly at quarterback in 2006, Barnes made the switch to wide receiver, posting a total of 82 receptions for 962 yards and nine touchdowns. He also had three carries for 11 yards on the ground.
After playing nine games his junior year and managing 355 receiving yards, Barnes's senior campaign was one of complete dominance.
During the 2009 season, including the Humanitarian Bowl, Barnes posted a remarkable 155 receptions for 1,770 yards and 19 touchdowns. His 155 receptions in a single season set not only a Division I record, but an All-Division record. His 1,770 receiving yards are a MAC record, while his career receptions (298), single-season touchdown receptions (19), single-game receptions (22), and single-game receiving yards (278) are all tops in BGSU football history.
Freddie Barnes was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago Bears in 2010 before playing briefly for the Chicago Rush and the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
