September 29, 2020 | Football
Bowling Green, Ohio -- For a week, we asked our fans to vote for their favorite student-athletes of the past 20 years. Throughout the month of September, we will reveal one selection at a time each weekday over a five-week stretch. Today, we highlight your No. 4 choice for the top student-athlete of the past 20 years, football player Matt Johnson!
4. Matt Johnson (2011 - 2015)
A native of Harrisburg, Pa., Matt Johnson was better than anyone throwing the football during his senior year.
After being redshirted in 2011 and playing sparingly in 2012, Johnson began to put it together in 2013, starting the final 13 games of the season. He threw for 3,467 yards and 25 touchdowns, with an additional five touchdowns coming on the ground. He threw for a remarkable 393 yards and five touchdowns in the MAC Championship game against Northern Illinois, earning Championship game MVP honors. His 3,467 yards were fourth most in school history, while 64.2 completion percentage was fifth-best all-time.
After a season-ending hip injury in 2014, Johnson attacked the 2015 season with a vengeance. Playing and starting in all 14 games for the Falcons, Johnson threw for a school- and MAC-record 4,946 yards and 46 touchdowns. As a result, he was named MAC Offensive Player of the Year, First Team All-MAC, and an honorable mention All-American by Sports Illustrated. He also earned the Sammy Baugh Award, given to the nation's top passer, and was a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award given to the country's top quarterback. Johnson, while being tabbed MAC East Offensive Player of the Week six times, became the first quarterback in school history to throw for 400 yards in back-to-back games, doing so in four consecutive games to open the season. He led the Falcons to their second MAC Championship victory in three years, and threw for three touchdowns against Georgia Southern in the GoDaddy Bowl.
Johnson also competed in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl with his teammate and classmate, Travis Greene. He is currently the running backs coach for the Kent State Golden Flashes.
