Falcons Over the Weekend
The Falcons fell to nationally-ranked Notre Dame Friday night by a score of 3-1. Sophomore Bryce Williamson scored the only goal for the Falcons, while junior Andrew Hammond stopped 22 of 25 shots in the loss. Bowling Green went down 2-0 before Williamson fired a laser past Notre Dame goaltender Mike Johnson at 12:13 of the second period. Bowling Green couldn't complete the comeback however, as the Irish added an insurance goal at 14:11 in the third period. Freshman Robbie Russo scored his first career goal to give ND the 3-1 lead, and the win.
Saturday produced the same outcome, as Notre Dame rallied in the third to defeat BG 3-2. Bryce Williamson scored for the second straight game, while sophomore Ryan Viselli notched his first goal of the season. Andrew Hammond stopped 23 of 26 shots in the loss. Williamson's goal with 20 seconds left in the second period gave the Falcons the lead heading into the final period, but BG was unable to hang on. Sophomore Anders Lee registered his league-leading tenth goal of the year, while senior Patrick Gaul recorded his second goal of the season to secure the win for Notre Dame.
The Last Time
The Falcons failed to secure a victory against Ferris State last season, losing both games at home to the Bulldogs by a combined score of 7-2. Jordan Samuels-Thomas recorded the only Falcon goal in the first game of the series, while goaltender Nick Eno stopped 13 of 16 shots in the loss. Bryce Williamson scored the only Falcon goal in the second contest, while Andrew Hammond stopped 22 of 24 shots in the loss.
Carpenter Responds
After failing to register a point in the road series against Lake Superior State, freshman Ryan Carpenter responded with a two-point weekend, recording an assist on both of Bryce Williamson's goals. Carpenter's two assists give him five on the year, good enough for a share with sophomore Camden Wojtala for the team lead. Carpenter's eight points now give him the team lead, as he passed Wojtala (7) over the weekend.
Williamson Wakes Up
Sophomore Bryce Williamson scored two goals over the weekend, marking his first point since netting two goals in the season-opening series against UConn. Williamson's four goals currently lead the team, putting him just ahead of freshman standout Ryan Carpenter, who has three.
Losing Streak
After starting the season with an impressive record of 4-0-1, the Falcons have struggled against CCHA opponents. Bowling Green is currently on a three-game losing streak that started in the final game on the road to Lake Superior State, and was capped off by a sweep at home by nationally ranked Notre Dame. The Falcons recorded six losing streaks last season consisting of three losses or more. Their longest losing streak last year lasted five games, spanning the entire month of January.
Goals Wanted
Similar to last season, the Falcons have struggled in the goal-scoring department. BG currently ranks last in the CCHA with an average of two goals-per-game. The Falcons have failed to win a game this season when their opponent scores more than a goal. The only non-loss came in the opening weekend of the season, when BG tied UConn 4-4. The Falcons' leader in goals is sophomore Bryce Williamson, who has recorded four on the year, ranking him fourteenth in the CCHA.
You Shall Not Pass
In contrast to their offensive struggles, the Falcons have done well defensively. The Falcons have only allowed an average of two goals-a-game, ranking them fourth in the CCHA. While junior Andrew Hammond's goaltending is most likely to thank for that, Bowling Green's young defensive core has been strong as well. Of the eight defensemen to play for the Falcons this season, six of them are carrying an even or positive mark for the year. Sophomore Jake Sloat's mark of +4 leads the team, while freshmen Marcus Perrier and Mike Sullivan, and juniors Ryan Peltoma and Ian Ruel rank in the top ten.
Spreading the Wealth
Bowling Green has already collected four wins this season, nearly half of their total from last year. What's even more impressive is that all four of the Falcons' wins have come on game-winning goals from different players.
- Bryce Williamson: 10/7/11 against UConn
- Dan DeSalvo: 10/14/11 against UAH
- Ryan Carpenter: 10/15/11 against UAH
- Adam Berkle: 10/21/11 against LSSU
Looking at Ferris State
The Bulldogs come into Bowling Green ranked tenth in the country, sporting a record of 6-2-0 on the season. Ferris opened the year on a 6-0 run before falling victim to a sweep at the hands of Michigan on the road. The Michigan series puts the Bulldog road record at 2-2 after Ferris opened the year with a sweep of St. Lawrence on the road. Ferris State's two-week home stand in the middle of the month culminated in four wins, including sweeps of RPI and Miami.
Junior Travis Ouellette leads the Bulldog scoring attack with six goals on the season, and eight points on the year. Senior defenseman Chad Billins is tied with Ouellette for the team lead in points (eight), and currently leads the team in assists with seven on the season. Junior Kyle Bonis also contributes, ranking second on the team with five goals on the year.
Unlike the Falcons, Ferris has chosen a goalie by committee approach. Senior Taylor Nelson and freshman CJ Motte have split the minutes this season, as both have an equal record of 3-1-0 on the year. While both goalies have split the time, Motte has done slightly better statistically. Motte has recorded a 1.25 goals-against-average with a .948 save percentage and two shutouts. Nelson has recorded a 2.26 goals-against-average with a .908 save percentage and one shutout.
The Bulldogs have really made their mark on special teams this season. Ferris currently ranks first in the CCHA on the penalty kill with a mark of 91.9 percent. The Bulldogs have had success on the power play as well, ranking second in the CCHA with a conversion rate of 23.9 percent. Ferris State's net of +8 during special teams play also ranks first in the CCHA.
