Game One (BGSU 8 - GU 7) Game Two (WVU 8 - BGSU 2)
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.—The Bowling Green State University baseball team split a doubleheader on Thursday, defeating Georgetown 8-7 in game one, before falling to West Virginia 8-2 in game two. With today's results, the Falcons now sit at 3-8.
Game One
The Falcons defeated the Hoyas in game one on Thursday afternoon at North Charlotte Regional Park, winning on a walk-off walk in the bottom of the tenth. The Falcons committed six errors on the afternoon, leading to the Hoyas scoring five unearned runs.
Cody Apthorpe started the game for the Orange and Brown, going six innings and allowing just two earned runs.
Georgetown led 6-1 following a three-error third inning by the Falcons defensively, leading to four unearned runs in the frame. That lead would hold until the bottom of the sixth, when the Falcons scored six runs to take the lead.
Brandon Howard and Alex Davison led off the sixth with bunt singles. After a strike out, Brian Bien would double into left field to score both runners. The very next batter, Patrick Lancaster, would triple over the right fielder's head, scoring Bien.
Following a pitching change by the Hoyas, head coach Danny Schmitz would get creative. Jesse Rait would execute a squeeze bunt to perfection to score Lancaster, but GU would also throw the ball away down the right field line on the play, allowing Rait to reach third. The Falcons would tie the game when a Jeremy Shay single scored Rait. T.J. Losby would score on a Hoyas' error, giving the Falcons the 7-6 lead after six.
Georgetown would tie the game in the top of the seventh with an unearned run off Jason Link.
In the top of the eighth, Nick Bruns would work out of a jam, caused by a two-out Falcon error. With runners on first and third and two down, Bruns would get a fly out to keep the score locked at seven.
The Falcons would get a runner into scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, but a ground out would end that threat.
Bruns would retire the Hoyas in the tenth, making way for the Falcons' offensive heroics. The first two batters would reach on singles in the home half of the tenth, but a double play would make the Falcons' chances seem bleak.
With a runner on third and two outs, Shay would work back from a two-strike count to draw a walk. Following a walk to Losby, GU would be up against the wall. With the bases loaded and two outs, Andrew Kubuski would draw the four=pitch walkoff RBI walk.
Bruns picked up the win for the Falcons, improving to 2-0 on the season. The loss snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Falcons.
Game Two
In game two, the Falcons would fall behind early to West Virginia. Making his first career start, freshman Brett Fitzwater would allow two runs on three hits in the first.
From there, Fitzwater settled in, going four innings and striking out four. After the first, he did not allow another run.
The Falcons would tie the game with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, on a Logan Walker RBI double and Howard RBI single.
The game wouldn't remain tied for long, as WVU would bounce back for five runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Mountaineers would get eight hits in the inning, taking the lead for good at 7-2.
WVU would tack on another run in the eighth to increase the lead to 8-2.
The Falcons would load the bases in the top of the ninth, but couldn't get the key hit to get a rally started.
The Falcons will be back in action on Saturday morning, squaring off with the Bison of North Dakota State at 10 am. The game will be played at Chain O' Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla. Mike Frank will take the mound for the Falcons. NDSU is coached by former Falcon pitching coach Tod Brown, who served as Danny Schmitz's assistant from 2000-07.
