October 02, 2020 | Men's Basketball
Bowling Green, Ohio -- For a week, we asked our fans to vote for their favorite student-athletes of the past 20 years. Throughout the month of September, we will reveal one selection at a time each weekday over a five-week stretch. Today, we highlight your No. 1 choice for the top student-athlete of the past 20 years, basketball player Justin Turner!
1. Justin Turner (2016 - Current)
Originally from Detroit, Mich., Justin Turner has never shied away from the biggest moments on the court.
After sitting out most of the 2016-17 season due to injury and using a redshirt year, Turner immediately made history by shattering the freshman single-season scoring record with 492 points, which had previously held since 1995-96. He was named to the All-MAC Freshman Team and honorable mention All-MAC. He led the team in scoring (15.9 points per game), steals (47), and ranked second in assists (81).
In the 2018-19 season, Turner continued his improvement into one of the best players in the conference, playing and starting in all 34 games for the Falcons. He became the first sophomore since Cornelius Cash in 1972-73 to earn All-MAC First Team, while also becoming the eighth player in program history to earn First Team All-NABC honors. He led the Orange and Brown in total points (619), assists (105), and steals (47), which made him the first player since Michael Huger in 1991-92 to lead the team in each of those three categories. He scored 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting in their win over No. 18 Buffalo in front of a sold out crowd at the Stroh Center. He finished with 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists against No. 18 Buffalo in the MAC Championship Game.
In 2019-20, Turner became the first player since Anthony Stacey in 1999 and 2000 to capture back-to-back First Team All-MAC honors. He also became the first player in program history to earn back-to-back First Team All-NABC honors. Turner averaged a career-high 18.8 points to lead the team, while ranking third on the team in assists (2.5) and rebounds (4.6). He finished with 26 points, six rebounds, and three assists at ranked LSU. Turner hit a number of clutch shots during the season, including a buzzer-beater against Western Kentucky, a pair of last-second free throws to down Toledo, and a last-second jumper to propel the Falcons past Ohio. He finished the regular season with a 24-point performance before the postseason was canceled due to COVID-19.
Justin Turner returns for the Falcons this season in hopes of capturing the elusive MAC Championship. He is 344 points shy of becoming the program's all-time leading scorer.
